A Non-Local Mode-I Cohesive Model for Ascending Thoracic Aorta Dissections (ATAD)

2018

This paper presents a non-local interface mechanical model to describe aortic dissection. In this regard, the mode-I debonding problem based on a cohesive zone modeling is endowed with non-local terms to include long-range interactions that are present in multi-layered biological tissue. Such non-local effects are related to the collagen fibers that transmit forces between non-adjacent elements. Numerical simulations are provided with different values of the non-local parameters in order to show the effect of the non-locality during the debonding processes.

A Methodology for Protection of Trees Against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life

2021

Some regions may be characterized by a very low annual lightning ground flash density, and yet lightning strikes seem to have been in those areas the cause of widespread wildfires in forested areas. Due to global climate change, these occurrences seem to be an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce the criteria for the deployment of tree lightning protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment. This work analytically identifies the critical trunk radius of the tree below which the tree may explode in the case of a lightning strike and ignite the surroundi…

The on-demand warehousing problem

2022

Warehouses are key elements of supply chain networks, and great attention is paid to increase their efficiency. Highly volatile space requirements are enablers of innovative resource sharing concepts, where warehouse capacities are traded on online platforms. In this context, our paper introduces the on-demand warehousing problem from the perspective of platform providers. The objective prioritises demand–supply matching with maximisation of the number of transactions. If there is a tie, the secondary objective maximises the number of suppliers matched with at least one customer and the number of customers that have matches within a specific threshold with respect to the minimum achievable …

Turing's Error-revised

2016

Many important lines of argumentation have been presented during the last decades claiming that machines cannot think like people. Yet, it has been possible to construct devices and information systems, which replace people in tasks which have previously been occupied by people as the tasks require intelligence. The long and versatile discourse over, what machine intelligence is, suggests that there is something unclear in the foundations of the discourse itself. Therefore, we critically studied the foundations of used theory languages. By looking critically some of the main arguments of machine thinking, one can find unifying factors. Most of them are based on the fact that computers canno…

OntoSTEP: Enriching product model data using ontologies

2012

The representation and management of product lifecycle information is critical to any manufacturing organization. Different modeling languages are used at different lifecycle stages, for example STEP's EXPRESS may be used at a detailed design stage, while UML may be used for initial design stages. It is necessary to consolidate product information created using these different languages to build a coherent knowledge base. In this paper, we present an approach to enable the translation of STEP schema and its instances to Ontology Web Language (OWL). This gives a model-which we call OntoSTEP-that can easily be integrated with any OWL ontologies to create a semantically rich model. As an examp…

Reducing whole-body vibration exposure in backhoe loaders by education of operators

2012

Author's version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ergon.2012.03.001 Whole-body vibration is a health hazard for operators of construction machinery. The level of whole-body vibration exposure on the operator is governed by three different factors; performance of the suspension system of the machine, planning of the work and the skills of the operator. In this research work it is investigated whether there is a potential in bringing down the level of whole-body vibration exposure by educating operators of backhoe loaders. This is carried out by an experimental setup. Six ex…

MACRO-ZONES SGBEM APPROACH FOR STATIC SHAKEDOWN ANALYSIS AS CONVEX OPTIMIZATION

2013

A new strategy utilizing the Multidomain SGBEM for rapidly performing shakedown analysis as a convex optimization problem has been shown in this paper. The present multidomain approach, called displacement method, makes it possible to consider step-wise physically and geometrically nonhomogeneous materials and to obtain a self-equilibrium stress equation regarding all the bem-elements of the structure. Since this equation includes influence coefficients, which characterize the input of the quadratic constraints, it provides a nonlinear optimization problem solved as a convex optimization problem. Furthermore, the strategy makes it possible to introduce a domain discretization exclusively of…

A beam search algorithm for minimizing crane times in premarshalling problems

2022

The premarshalling problem consists of sorting the containers placed in a bay of the container yard so that they can be retrieved in the order in which they will be required. We study the premarshalling problem with crane time minimization objective and develop a beam search algorithm, with some new elements adapted to the characteristics of the problem, to solve it. We propose various evaluation criteria, depending on the type of container movement, for its local evaluation; a new heuristic algorithm including local search for blue its global evaluation; and several new dominance rules. The computational study shows the contribution of each new element. The performance of the complete algo…

Wybrane kierunki rozwoju polskiej teorii i praktyki resocjalizacji

2020

The purpose of this article is to present scientiR c papers setting the development direction of social rehabilitation theory and practice in Poland. ƒ e presentation begins with the classic± theory of Czesław Czapów, the creator of the Warsaw school of social rehabilitation, because this theory has been used in practice and continues to inspire young generation researchers. Most space was devoted to cognitivist-oriented resocialization, using the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Dynamically developing social rehabilitation based on the paradigm of positivity was also presented, including the concept of resilience and the concept of creative resocialization, which postulate worki…
