Post‐Soviet Reform in Latvia: Early Progress and Future Prospects

1992

After the rapid and dramatic demise of the Soviet Union in 1991, 15 newly autonomous republics are restructuring their economies after decades of central Communist planning. The three Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia had successful market‐oriented economies during more than two decades of independence between World Wars I and II and were comparatively strong performers within the USSR after being occupied in 1940. A case study of Latvia looks at the historic factors and political issues which are shaping the current reform process. A contrast of state‐run, collective and private enterprises is used to illustrate the rapid changes which now place Latvia at the forefront among p…

Simultaneous quantification of serum phytosterols and cholesterol precursors using a simple gas chromatographic method

2012

Determination of the main phytosterols (Ps, β-sitosterol and campesterol) and cholesterol precursors (desmosterol and lathosterol) in human serum using a simple GC-FID method has been validated. Direct saponification, without lipid extraction, sterols extraction, and further derivatization was applied to samples prior to GC analysis. To evaluate the method, a pool of serum samples from eight healthy women was used. Good linearity (r>0.99) was found in the assay range: β-sitosterol (0.99–17.82 µg/mL), campesterol (0.14–10.8 µg/mL), desmosterol (0.17–2.6 µg/mL), and lathosterol (0.6–5.97 µg/mL). Limits of detection (ng/mL) were: 86 (β-sitosterol), 42 (campesterol), 4 (desmosterol), and 44 (la…

Fast extraction methodologies for the determination of toxic arsenic in meat

2017

Summary A nonchromatographic analytical procedure has been developed for the determination of arsenic in meat samples including the major toxic arsenic species arsenite, arsenate, monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimetylarsinic acid (DMA). The method is based on the extraction of arsenic species in mild conditions, selective trivalent hydride formation and final determination by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (HG-AFS). Different extractant agents and two different procedures, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasound assisted extraction at room temperature, were evaluated for As species extraction. The method provided a limit of detection of 0.013 ng mL−1 and a…

An experimental investigation on the poor hydrogen sorption properties of nano-structured LaNi5 prepared by ball-milling

2011

Abstract Nano-structured LaNi5 hydrogen storage materials prepared by ball-milling is analysed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). DSC results indicate a partial elimination of defects at 500 °C in a more efficient way for the short-time ball-milled powders compared to the long-time ball-milled ones. XPS results show almost no change in the core-level electronic structure for La and Ni of LaNi5 in the bulk and the nano-structured forms, but gives an indication that the self-restoring mechanism of the active surface observed in the bulk sample (Siegmann et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 972) may not be occurring in the nano-powders. Results fro…

Wavelength-compensated time-sequential multiplexed color joint transform correlator

2010

We report a wavelength-compensated three-channel (RGB) joint transform correlator (JTC) for color pattern recognition using a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) operating in binary pure phase modulation. We apply a previously reported time-multiplexing technique useful in creating wavelength-compensated diffraction patterns, based on the synchronization of properly scaled diffraction masks with the input wavelength selection obtained by applying a rotating RGB color-filter wheel to an Ar-Kr laser. The application of this technique to a JTC architecture permits real-time color object detection. In order to achieve a high light efficiency for the correlation process, w…

Structural characterization of Nigerian coals by X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy

2010

Abstract The structural parameters of six Nigerian coals were determined by X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. This study reveals that the coals contain crystalline carbon of turbostratic structure with some amount of highly disordered amorphous carbon. The average lateral sizes ( L a ), stacking heights ( L c ) and interlayer spacing ( d 002 ) of the crystallite structures calculated from the X-ray intensities range from 16.47 to 25.70, 8.12 to 13.25 and 3.48 to 3.58 A, respectively. The L a values derived from the Raman spectra analyses using the classical linear relationship between 1/ L a and the D/G band ratio are higher (27.53–34.67 A) than values obtained from X-ray diff…

COMPARING PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS BY SEDIMENTATION AND LASER DIFFRACTION METHOD

2009

In this paper a brief review of the laser diffraction method is firstly carried out. Then, for 30 soil samples having a different texture classification sampled in Sicilian basin, a comparison between the two techniques is developed. The analysis demonstrated that the sand content measured by Sieve-Hydrometer method can be assumed equal to the one determinated by laser diffraction technique while an overestimation of the clay fraction measured by Sieve-Hydrometer method respect to laser diffraction technique was obtained. Finally a set of equations useful to refer LD measurements to SH method was proposed.

Finite element analysis of laser shock peening of 2050-T8 aluminum alloy

2015

Laser shock processing is a recently developed surface treatment designed to improve the mechanical properties and fatigue performance of materials, by inducing a deep compressive residual stress field. The purpose of this work is to investigate the residual stress distribution induced by laser shock processing in a 2050-T8 aeronautical aluminium alloy with both X-ray diffraction measurements and 3D finite element simulation. The method of X-ray diffraction is extensively used to characterize the crystallographic texture and the residual stress crystalline materials at different scales (macroscopic, mesoscopic and microscopic).Shock loading and materials’ dynamic response are experimentally…

White-light-modified Talbot array illuminator with a variable density of light spots.

2008

A flexible array illuminator, comprising only two conventional optical elements, with a variable density of bright white-light spots is presented. The key to our method is to obtain with a single diffractive lens an achromatic version of different fractional Talbot images, produced by free-space propagation, of the amplitude distribution at the back focal plane of a periodic refractive microlens array under a broadband point-source illumination. Some experimental results of our optical procedure are also shown.

An experimental methodology to study polymer crystallization under processing conditions. The influence of high cooling rates

2002

Abstract A new experimental route for investigating polymer crystallization under very high cooling rates (up to 2000°C/s) is described. A complete and exhaustive description of the apparatus employed for preparing thin quenched samples (100– 200 μm thick) is reported, the cooling mechanism and the temperature distribution across sample thickness is also analysed, showing that the final structure is determined only by the thermal history imposed by the fast quench apparatus. Details concerning the characterization techniques used to probe the final structure are reported, including density measurements and wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns. Experimental results concerning isotactic poly…
