Service Regulations, Input Prices and Export Volumes: Evidence from a Panel of Manufacturing Firms

2019

Export intensity and the productivity gains of exporting

2013

This article analyses whether the productivity gains associated with Learning-by-Exporting (LBE) (controlling for self-selection) depend on the intensity of the firm's exporting activity. The results from a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms indicate that the yearly average gains in productivity are larger for those firms that increase their export-to-sales ratio.

Innovation Complementarity and Scale of Production

2006

We present an econometrically feasible model that uses the information contained in the innovation profile of each firm to test for the existence of complementarity among production and innovation strategies. Our approach is able to distinguish between complementarity and correlation induced by unobserved heterogeneity. We apply the model to analyze the Spanish ceramic tile industry where the adoption of the single firing furnace in the 1980's facilitated the introduction of new product designs as well as opening new ways of organizing production. Our econometric results show that there is significant complementarity between product and process innovation. Small firms tend to be more innova…

Sharing economy and incumbents' pricing strategy: The impact of Airbnb on the hospitality industry

2019

Abstract In this paper, we examine how the emergence of sharing economy platforms influences incumbents' price responses. Grounding on the literature on price reactions to new entrants and on the unique characteristics of the sharing economy, we argue that the effect of the penetration of the sharing economy on incumbents' prices is not straightforward, and actually depends on the type of incumbents as well as certain product/service offer characteristics. Indeed, relying on a large sample of hotel price offerings from the Italian market, we find that the effect of the growing relevance of the sharing economy (exemplified by Airbnb) on incumbents' prices depends on the type of incumbents (l…

Experimental Validation of a Novel Method for Harmonic Mitigation for a Three-Phase Five-Level Cascaded H-Bridges Inverter

2019

In modern high-power electrical drives, the efficiency of the system is a crucial constraint. Moreover, the efficiency of power converters plays a fundamental role in modern applications requiring also a limited weight, such as the electric vehicles and novel more electric aircraft. The reduction of losses pushes for systems with a dc bus and a high number of dc/ac converters, widespread in the vehicle, not burdened by a too expensive data processing system. The purpose of this article is to concur to reduce losses by proposing an innovative selective harmonic mitigation method based on the identification of the working areas where the reference harmonics present lower amplitudes. In partic…

A Contribution to Tests Standardization for Inverter-Fed Asynchronous Machines

1986

Losses of inverter-fed asynchronous motors and their experimental evaluation are considered. The formal expressions of iron and copper losses are first recalled, and it is shown as they are influenced by the harmonic content of inverter output voltages. Theoretical and experimental values of these losses are then given together with the presentation of the experimental tests used for their determination. A suitable set of tests is then suggested for the determination of the conventional efficiency of inverter-fed asynchronous motors. The content cannot be considered exhaustive on the matter. It represents only a first contributive approach to the standardization of inverter-fed asynchronous…

A Two-Stage Fault Detection and Classification Scheme for Electrical Pitch Drives in Offshore Wind Farms Using Support Vector Machine

2019

Pitch systems are one of the components with the most frequent failure in wind turbines. This paper presents a two-stage fault detection and classification scheme for electric motor drives in wind turbine pitch systems. The presented approach is suitable for application in offshore wind farms with electric pitch systems driven by induction motors as well as permanent magnet synchronous motors. The adopted strategy utilizes three-phase motor current sensing at the pitch drives for fault detection and only when a fault condition is detected at this stage, features extracted from the current signals are transmitted to a support vector machine classifier located centrally to the wind farm. The …

Eco-sustainable energy and environmental strategies in design for recycling: the software “ENDLESS”

2003

Abstract This paper describes a model, named “ENDLESS”, useful to address the design process towards more eco-compatible solutions. In particular, this tool can support the designer in the choice of the product with an higher recyclability potential from a set of different alternatives. The model takes into consideration a Multi-Attribute Decision-Making method and allows calculating a “Global Recycling Index” (GRI) starting from a set of energy, environmental, technical and economic indicators. A weight is assigned to each parameter following the experience of the designer; a sensitivity analysis is then performed to state how the different assumptions can affect the final results. The mod…

Dielectric properties of pineapple as function of temperature and water content

2013

Microwave assisted processing is a new and growing field of interest for food industry (Tang et al., 2002; Schubert & Regier, 2005). Many advantages (fast treatments, selective heating and so on) are obtainable by microwave heating due to its peculiar energy transfer that derives from a direct interaction between electromagnetic field and matter (Metaxas & Meredith, 1983). As foods are poor heat conductors, endogenous heat generation allows to overcome some difficulties that characterise conventional heating methods based on convective/conductive heat transfer phenomena (Barba, 2005; Botha et al., 2012). The key-role in design, modelling and management of microwave assisted processes is pla…

Layer-wise and equivalent single layer models for smart multilayered plates

2014

Layer-wise and equivalent single layer plate models for magneto-electro-elastic multiphysics laminates are presented in a unified framework. They are based on variable kinematics and quasi-static behavior of the electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic state of each single layer is preliminary determined by solving the corresponding governing equations coupled with the proper interface continuity and external boundary conditions. By so doing, the electromagnetic state is condensed into the plate kinematics and the layer governing equations are inferred by the principle of virtual displacements. This approach identifies effective mechanical layers, which are kinematically equivalent to th…
