Free-surface shape in unbaffled stirred vessels: Experimental study via digital image analysis

There is a growing interest in using unbaffled stirred tanks for addressing a number of processing needs such as low shear damage (sensitive biocultures), low attrition (solid–liquid applications), deep-cleaning/sterilization (pharmaceutical applications). The main feature of uncovered, unbaffled stirred tanks is highly swirling motion of the fluid that results in a deformation of the free liquid surface. At sufficiently high agitation speeds the resulting whirlpool reaches the impeller and gives rise to a gas–liquid dispersion, so leading to the formation of a dispersion without the use of gas-sparger; the so-called self-inducing operation of the vessel. Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Towers Cascade Under Lightning Surge Conditions

In this paper, the simulation of towers cascade under lightning surge conditions is presented. Finite-difference time-domain method is used to solve both the Maxwell's and telegraph equations. Maxwell's equations and the time-domain resistivity model of Darveniza are used to simulate the nonlinear behavior of the grounding system. Telegraph equations are used to describe the propagation in the overhead lines. Multiple ionizations, on different grounding electrodes belonging to various towers, can be implemented simultaneously, without making assumptions on the shape of the ionized areas.

Optimization of hybrid – ground coupled and air source – heat pump systems in combination with thermal storage

Ground coupled heat pumps are attractive solutions for cooling and heating commercial buildings due to their high efficiency and their reduced environmental impact. Two possible ideas to improve the efficiency of these systems are decoupling energy generation from energy distribution and combining different HVAC systems. The mechanics of continuous chip formation in oblique cutting with single-edged tool—part II. Experimental verification of the theory

Abstract Experimental results obtained during oblique cutting of annealed steel Ck 45 (SAE-AISI 1045) with a single-edged tool are presented. Extensive measurements of forces, cutting ratio, chip flow angle etc. have been carried out under a wide range of cutting conditions. The measured data obtained from these cutting tests are used to test assumptions proposed in the first part of this work. In relation to previous works dealing with oblique cutting problems the present one extends to tools with angles of tool obliquity ranging from 30° to 70° and having a large negative rake angle.

The mechanics of continuous chip formation in oblique cutting with single-edged tool — Part I. Theory

Abstract The paper presents a new point of view on oblique cutting mechanics when cutting with a single-edged tool. This is based on the main assumption that plastic flow of material during chip forming occurs in the set of planes normal to the cutting edge. As a consequence of the transformation of various orthocartesian systems some new generalized relationships for kinematics of oblique cutting operation and plastic deformation in the shear zone are derived.

Application of a decision making method to improve an industrial hot extrusion forging process

Abstract Success of a bulk forming process is significantly affected by several operative parameters, such as dies and workpiece temperature, friction factor, preformed dimensions and its initial positioning. In the paper the hot extrusion forging of an half shaft of a two stroke motorcycle engine has been investigated.
