Following Nelson's primary typology of enterprises based on a characterization of their technical change process (bulk commodities; complex systems producers; and chemical products producers) this chapter presents a case study on the innovation diffusion in the European tile industry based on the analysis of its manufacturing process and supply chain. The producers of ceramic tiles, the machinery producers and the frits and glazes producers fit each of Nelson's categories. Technological development is seen as one of the fundamental forces in shaping the modern economies. The effects and the role of technological development are also central questions in many issues of environmental protection. This paper presents the results of a life cycle assessment study of the Finnish pulp an paper industry. Three comparative scenarios are drawn. Two scenarios describe the technological levels and production volumes of 1993 and 1997. Aim of this work is to compare two different total knee prostheses that differ mainly in the shape of the polyethylene (PE) component inserted between the femoral and tibial plates. The best solution between them has been originally reshaped in order to reduce stress peaks. The study procedure has been divided into the following steps. First step is the digitalisation of the shape of the prostheses by means of a 3D laser scanner. This paper presents a new approach in realizing various carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation techniques by a generalized control algorithm, which is referred to as the universal control algorithm and is obtained via unequal sharing of null states. The flexibility of such an approach allows one to easily and quickly control two-level inverters. The quantitative evaluation of elastic springback in sheet metal stamping processes is still today a very interesting research topic, since this phenomenon causes a manufacturing shape defect. A measurement technique based on the shadow moiré method, already developed by the present authors, has been further upgraded and applied to evaluate the springback phenomenon in the deep drawing of square boxes, the basic three-dimensional stamping process. A new approach to study material bonding in extrusion porthole dies

Abstract Porthole die extrusion processes are widely spread even for most recent industrial applications. In turn knowledge base is often linked to make best expertise rather than to scientific fundaments. In the last years several FE models were developed but actual material bonding was not taken into account. In the paper a new approach is presented determining the critical value of the bonding criterion from flat rolling experiments and modelling the actual welding occurring in extrusion of complex profiles. The criterion was tested considering an industrial porthole die extrusion process and experimental parts were analysed to validate the proposed approach.
