Review of Non-English Corpora Annotated for Emotion Classification in Text

2020

In this paper we try to systematize the information about the available corpora for emotion classification in text for languages other than English with the goal to find what approaches could be used for low-resource languages with close to no existing works in the field. We analyze the corresponding volume, emotion classification schema, language of each corresponding corpus and methods employed for data preparation and annotation automation. We’ve systematized twenty-four papers representing the corpora and found that corpora were mostly for the most spoken world languages: Hindi, Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, Japanese etc. A typical corpus contained several thousand of manually-annotated ent…

Turkish women writers in English translation

2011

The present paper aims to present a brief survey of Turkish women writers in English translation. Due to the dominant position of English, Turkey has been rather dependent on translations from this language and the flow of translations into the opposite direction has been quite slow. Yet, there is a considerable increase in the number of translations from Turkish into English especially since the 1980s. This also holds true for the works of women writers, and, of women’s fiction in particular, which is closely related to the bond between writing and women’s increased consciousness. The paper also briefly touches upon issues such as what has not been translated and why, and the role translat…

Getting Adapted? A Comparative Study of Qualified Turkish Return Migrants from Germany and the USA

2017

When we consider the international migration history of Turkey, we see the key position of the immigration of worker migrants to Germany that has been going on since the 1960s. Due to the waves of migration from Turkey to Europe, and especially to Germany, Turks now form one of the largest minority groups living in Western Europe who have migrated from outside of the European Union (EU) region (Sirkeci 2002: 9). As a consequence, beginning from the first period of migration, Turkish migration to Germany has been a subject that social scientists have intensively analyzed. However, most studies have focused on guest workers and there have been a limited number of studies looking at the case o…

Evaluation of the variations in chemical and microbiological properties of the sourdoughs produced with selected lactic acid bacteria strains during …

2022

This research aimed to analyze variations in chemical properties, microbiological characteristics and generated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile during sourdough fermentation. Sourdoughs were collected from different cities in Turkey at two different times and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the samples were identified with culture-independent and culture-dependent molecular methods. According to culture-dependent methodology, thirteen LAB species were identified. Lactobacillus spp. were identified as the major group according to MiSeq Illumina analysis. Technological potential of commonly isolated LAB species was evaluated. Due to high frequency of isolation, Fructilactobacillus san…

Non-abusing mothers’ agency after disclosure of the child’s extra-familial sexual abuse

2020

This qualitative study analysed the agency of eight non-abusing mothers in the Turkish Cypriot Community after disclosure that their child had been sexually abused by someone outside the family. The aim was to discover how, after disclosure, such mothers act to protect their children in the contexts of their family and community. The data were gathered via semi-structured in-depth interviews and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). In the nuclear family context, maternal agency emerged in the form of motherhood skills, including emotionally supporting the abused child, double-checking the child’s safety or limiting the child’s mobility, and controlling the actions…
