The European Capital of Culture (ECOC) is one of the longest running cultural initiatives of the European Union (EU). The EU annually designates one or more cities with this much-competed-for city brand. In various cities the ECOC designation has caused tensions and disagreements over the decision-making process, funding of cultural events, and the use of urban space. Bakalaura darba autors Raivo Štrāls izstrādāja darbu, kura temats ir “Ālandu salas – strīds starp Somiju un Zviedriju”. Darba mērķis bija pētīt Ālandu salu strīda rašanās cēloņus un salu nozīmīgumu gan no teritoriālajiem, gan ekonomiskajiem aspektiem. Bakalaura darbs ir starpnozaru pētījums, kurā vēsturiski politisko norišu iztirzājums apvienots ar socioloģiskas aptaujas veikšanu un tās analīzi par šiem notikumiem mūsdienās.
