Maahanmuuttajien määrä Suomessa on kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti sitten 1990-luvun. Muutos väestörakenteessa vaikuttaa myös suomalaisten koulujen arkeen ja opettajien työhön, mutta tutkimusta maahanmuuttajista erityisesti kieliaineiden oppijina on vähän. This paper sets out to chart underlying assumptions and fundamental axioms of an integrative research edifice for studying language and how it is developed over time as a human- and culture-centered and multifaceted phenomenon. This case study on two migrant pupils of Finnish as L2 was carried out in Finland, which lies outside the most common context of such research, i.e. ESL or EFL in an English-speaking country. The study thus attempts to address the need to expand the research contexts of L2 identity issues. Perusopetukseen valmistavaa opetusta järjestetään kunnissa eri tavoin. Erityisesti pääkaupunkiseudulla alkuopetusikäisten valmistavaa opetusta on ryhdytty järjestämään inklusiivisesti yleisopetuksen ryhmässä. Tarvitaan kuitenkin tutkimustietoa siitä, millaiset ratkaisut tukevat parhaiten vastasaapuneen oppilaan suomen kielen oppimista ja kotoutumista. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan maahanmuuton kielikysymyksiä Unkarista Suomeen ja Ruotsiin työllistyneiden terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten näkökulmasta. Neksusanalyyttisessä viitekehyksessä tutkitaan sitä investointia, jonka nämä työntekijät tekevät oppiakseen uutta, työssä tarvitsemaansa kieltä eli suomea tai ruotsia. Tutkimusasetelma on pitkittäinen, ja analyysi perustuu terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten sekä muutamien kielikoulutuksesta ja rekrytoinnista vastaavien henkilöiden haastatteluihin.
