A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Communication Apprehension : A Comparison of Three European Nations
2015
Data from England, Finland, and Germany were used to explore national differences in communication apprehension (CA). Based on the traditions of oral communication training in each nation, and the history of cross-cultural comparisons in CA, it was proposed that national differences would emerge. English participants scored lower than Finnish and German participants on totalCA, publicCA, dyadicCA, and meetingCA; Finnish participants scored higher than all nations on totalCA, dyadicCA, and meetingCA; and German participants consistently scored in the middle on all aspects of CA, except for publicCA. The study of oral communication, conversational style, and politeness are discussed as potent…
Seinäjoen Aalto-keskuksen paikan henkeä etsimässä : "Alvarin askelissa" -teemalukuvuoden suunnitteluprosessin kuvaus
2015

2010
Arkkitehti Alvar Aalto sai suunniteltavakseen Muuramen kirkon vuonna 1926.Tämä klassisistinen kirkko on pohjois-eteläsuuntaan sijoitettu yksilaivainen valkoiseksi rapattu pitkäkirkko, joka kohoaa kylätaajamassa kahden järven välisellä Muuratharjulla. Kirkon pohjoisjulkisivua hallitsee pääsisäänkäyntiä korostava pyörökaarisyvennys, jonka muoto toistuu kirkon eteläistä julkisivua hallitsevan puolipyöreän apsidin muodossa. Rakennuksen itäsivulla nousee korkea ja kapea campanile-tyylinen kellotorni. Länsipuolen julkisivua hallitsee runkohuoneeseen nähden poikittain sijoitettu seurakuntasali, jonka alaosa avautuu pieneksi arkadikaariston kehystämäksi loggiaksi. Sen edessä oli alun perin kirkkota…

The self-perceived commitment and relationship maintenance behaviors among Finnish-Chinese couples in Finland : an application of the investment mode…
2015
The investment model (2003) has been widely used in romantic relationship studies but rarely in an intercultural context. This study tests the investment model by examining Finnish-Chinese couples’ self-perceptions of commitment level and relationship maintenance behaviors. A qualitative research method with deductive thematic analysis approach is applied. This study finds that Finnish-Chinese couples have relatively high level of commitment. They tend to remain in their relationships, to actively derogate alternatives, to sacrifice self-welfare for gratifying relationship well-being, to perceive their relationships as good and healthy and to choose relationship constructive responses under…
The pedagogical development of an international teacher in the cultural context of Finnish CLIL home economics
2016
This thesis draws on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) as a methodological innovation in language education. In order to become competent CLIL teachers in 21st century, however, teachers should not merely have expertise knowledge in their own teaching fields but take pedagogical tact into consideration. The aim of this qualitative action research is to understand: (1) How an international teacher from Taiwan utilized the theoretical framework of CLIL 4Cs and (2) How 4Cs were used as a support to develop pedagogical tact in CLIL home economics classes in a Finnish lower secondary school. The action research approach and process were conducted in two cycles that included plannin…

The emergence and adaptive use of prestige in an online social learning task
2020
AbstractPrestige-biased social learning occurs when individuals preferentially learn from others who are highly respected, admired, copied, or attended to in their group. This form of social learning is argued to reflect novel forms of social hierarchy in human societies, and, by providing an efficient short-cut to acquiring adaptive information, underpin the cumulative cultural evolution that has contributed to our species’ ecological success. Despite these potentially important consequences, little empirical work to date has tested the basic predictions of prestige-biased social learning. Here we provide evidence supporting the key predictions that prestige-biased social learning is used …
