Vēsturiskās pilsētas ainavas pieeja kultūras mantojuma saglabāšanai Kuldīgā
2015
X-ray and dielectric characterization of Co doped tetragonal BaTiO3 ceramics
2016
ABSTRACTThe crystal structure modifications of BaTiO3 induced by cobalt doping were studied. The polycrystalline (1 − x)BaTiO3 + xCo2O3 samples, with x ≤ 10 wt.%, were prepared by high temperature sintering conventional method. According to X-ray phase and structural characterization, performed by full-profile Rietveld refinement technique, all synthesized samples showed tetragonal symmetry perovskite structure with minor amount of parasitic phases. Pure single-phase composition has been detected only in the low level of doping BaTiO3. It was indicated that substitution of Co for the Ti sites in the (1 − x)BaTiO3 + xCo2O3 series led to decrease of tetragonality (c/a) of the BaTiO3 perovskit…
Enhancement of the dielectric response through Al-substitution in La1.6Sr0.4NiO4 nickelates
2016
The structures and dielectric properties of La1.6Sr0.4Ni1−xAlxO4 (x = 0, 0.2 and 0.4) ceramics elaborated using the Pechini method were studied for the first time. The same unique tetragonal phase was found in all compounds. The lattice parameters were found using Rietveld refinement. The surface morphology characterization and elemental analysis of these samples were respectively carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A giant dielectric response was observed in these ceramics, and one dielectric relaxation was found. The substitution of nickel with aluminum results in a colossal dielectric constant value (>106). The dielectric l…
Spin crossover (SCO) iron(II) coordination polymer chain: Synthesis, structural and magnetic characterizations of [Fe(abpt)2(μ-M(CN)4)] (M=PtII and N…
2013
Abstract New iron(II) coordination polymeric neutral chain of formula [Fe(abpt) 2 (μ-M(CN) 4 )], with M = Pt II ( 1 ), Ni II ( 2 ) and abpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, have been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The two compounds are isostructural as deduced from a Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data of 2 simulated from the single crystal structure of 1 . The crystal packing of 1 is formed by regular chains running along the crystallographic [−1 0 1] direction where the planar [Pt(CN) 4 ] 2− anion acts as a μ 2 -bridging ligand via two nitrogen atoms of two different trans cyano groups, whi…
Pharmacophore-Based Design of New Chemical Scaffolds as Translational Readthrough-Inducing Drugs (TRIDs)
2020
[Image: see text] Translational readthrough-inducing drugs (TRIDs) rescue the functional full-length protein expression in genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, caused by premature termination codons (PTCs). Small molecules have been developed as TRIDs to trick the ribosomal machinery during recognition of the PTC. Herein we report a computational study to identify new TRID scaffolds. A pharmacophore approach was carried out on compounds that showed readthrough activity. The pharmacophore model applied to screen different libraries containing more than 87000 compounds identified four hit-compounds presenting scaffolds with diversity from the oxadiazole lead. These compounds have been s…
The north-eastern aeolian ‘European Sand Belt’ as potential record of environmental changes: A case study from Eastern Latvia and Southern Estonia
2016
Abstract The Latvian and Estonian inland dunes belong to the north-eastern part of the ‘European Sand Belt’ (ESB). These dunes are widely distributed over broad glaciolacustrine plains and Late Glacial alluvial deltas, considered to be potential sources for the aeolian material. Little is known about these aeolian sediments and their substratum; here we present a detailed sedimentary structural and textural characterisation together with a luminescence-based chronology. Through a comparison between grain-size, rounding of quartz grains and surface characteristics in medium/coarse (0.5–0.8 mm) sand, and the light mineral content, we found an alternation of aeolian and periglacial components.…
Seismites resulting from high-frequency, high-magnitude earthquakes in Latvia caused by Late Glacial glacio-isostatic uplift
2016
Abstract Geologically extremely rapid changes in altitude by glacial rebound of the Earth crust after retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet at the end of the last Weichselian glaciation influenced the palaeogeography of northern Europe. The uplift of the Earth crust apparently was not gradual, but shock-wise, as the uplift was accompanied by frequent, high-magnitude earthquakes. This can be deduced from strongly deformed layers which are interpreted as seismites. Such seismites have been described from several countries around the Baltic Sea, including Sweden, Germany and Poland. Now similarly deformed layers that must also be interpreted as seismites, have been discovered also in Latvia, a…
Pathways towards a sustainable future envisioned by early-career conservation researchers
2021
Scientists have warned decision-makers about the severe consequences of the global environmental crisis since the 1970s. Yet ecological degradation continues and little has been done to address climate change. We investigated early-career conservation researchers' (ECR) perspectives on, and prioritization of, actions furthering sustainability. We conducted a survey (n = 67) and an interactive workshop (n = 35) for ECR attendees of the 5th European Congress of Conservation Biology (2018). Building on these data and discussions, we identified ongoing and forthcoming advances in conservation science. These include increased transdisciplinarity, science communication, advocacy in conservati…
Potential risk evaluation for unintended entry of genetically modified plant Propagating material in Europe through import of seeds and animal feed –…
2019
Significant attention has been drawn to the adventitious and technically unavoidable presence of genetically modified (GM) organisms in the food and feed imported into the European Union (EU), while the potential presence of GM seeds in material for cultivation is less studied. Here we report a study from an EU member state, Latvia, during years 2017–2018 regarding monitoring for the presence of GM seeds in certified seed and animal feed material. Eighty-two and 28 samples of seeds intended for cultivation were analyzed in 2017 and 2018, respectively. One soybean sample contained MON40-3-2 soybean seeds (0.09 ± 0.01%) and one maize sample contained MON810 maize seeds (0.08 ± 0.01%). In addi…
