Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation and Neuromuscular Recovery after a Running Race

2006

International audience; Purpose: This double-blind study investigated the effects of vitamin and mineral complex supplementation on the neuromuscular function of the knee-extensor muscles after a prolonged trail running race. Methods: Twenty-two well-trained endurance runners took either placebo (Pl group) or vitamins and minerals (Vm group) for 21 d before the race and for 2 d after the race. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and surface EMG activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle were recorded before (pre) and 1 h (post), 24 h (post 24) and 48 h (post 48) after the race. Central activation ratio (CAR), neural (M-wave), and contractile (muscular twitch) properties of the quadriceps…

Adaptations neuromusculaires des muscles extenseurs du genou : contractions fatigantes uni- vs bi-latérales

2010

The aim of this work was to determine i) the influence of the level of absolute force on the duration of the endurance time, and subsequent neuromuscular alterations in same individual at the end of an exercise performed at the same relative intensity, with one or two legs, ii) the influence of central drive on the force capacity production of the knee extensor muscles during unilateral (UL) vs. bilateral (BL) contractions, iii) activation mechanisms evolution for a serie of submaximal evoked contractions by electrostimulation (EMS). The results of the first study confirm that the endurance limit depends on the level of absolute force for the same individual, contraction duration for UL is …

Neural contribution to postactivation potentiation

2015

The current study was designed to investigate the contribution of neural factors to postactivation potentiation (PAP). Neuromuscular function (i.e. twitches, H-reflexes, motor evoked potentials, and voluntary isometric ballistic contractions) of 8 power-trained (POW) and 8 endurance-trained (END) athletes was recorded before and after a 8-second maximal isometric conditioning contraction (CC) to induce PAP, to elucidate discriminating neural factors in exploiting PAP that might arise from the former training background compared to the latter. After CC, twitch peak force and rate of force development were significantly increased, with higher potentiation in POW (29 ± 11% and 64 ± 24%) than E…

Neuromuscular adaptations to single-session combined strength and endurance training in untrained men : an examination of the order effect

2013

Understanding the adaptations to single-session combined strength (S) and endurance (E) training has received increased attention in scientific literature through the expand-ing use of combined training programs for practical purposes. However, the intra-session exercise order when performing both E and S in the same training session may limit potential strength development, as the neuromuscular adaptations to either training mode alone are very different. Research on the effect of the intra-session exercise order of combined training on various training-induced adaptations, i.e. the order effect, is currently limited, especially with regard to the neuromuscular adaptations. Therefore, the …

Optimal inter-stimulus interval for interpolated twitch technique when using double pulse stimulation

2013

Interpolated twitch technique is a method frequently used to assess voluntary activa- tion. This method uses electrically evoked twitch superimposed on the voluntary activi- ty and its comparison with the twitch in rested muscle i.e. control twitch, to evaluate completeness of muscle activation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ef- fect of interval in paired stimulation on control twitch in young and elderly individuals with bent and flexed knee positions. Supramaximal electrical stimulation consisted of one single stimulus and eight paired stimulation with intervals from 5 to 40ms, with increments of 5ms. In evoked twitches normalized peak torque amplitude (NPT), time to pe…

Muscle function in monozygotic female twin pairs discordant for hormone replacement therapy

2011

Introduction: Postmenopausal monozygotic twin pairs discordant for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) provide an advantageous study design controlling for genetic background for elucidating the relationships between aging, sex hormone levels, muscle strength, contractile capacity, and fatigability. Methods: Thirteen postmenopausal monozygotic twin pairs discordant for HRT were measured for maximal voluntary torque (MVC) and twitch characteristics using electrical stimulation before and after intermittent dynamic plantarflexor exercise until exhaustion. Results: Peak twitch torque was 32% higher in HRT users than in their non-HRT, genetically identical sisters (P = 0.002), but MVC did not dif…

Understanding altered contractile properties in advanced age : insights from a systematic muscle modelling approach

2023

Age-related alterations of skeletal muscle are numerous and present inconsistently, and the effect of their interaction on contractile performance can be nonintuitive. Hill-type muscle models predict muscle force according to well-characterised contractile phenomena. Coupled with simple, yet reasonably realistic activation dynamics, such models consist of parameters that are meaningfully linked to fundamental aspects of muscle excitation and contraction. We aimed to illustrate the utility of a muscle model for elucidating relevant mechanisms and predicting changes in output by simulating the individual and combined effects on isometric force of several known ageing-related adaptations. Simu…

Type IV collagen and laminin in slow and fast skeletal muscle in rats--effects of age and life-time endurance training.

1988

The changes in the biochemical composition of basement membrane (BM) in slow-twitch (m. soleus, MS) and fast-twitch (m. rectus femoris, MRF) skeletal muscles of rats were studied during aging and life-time endurance training (treadmill running). The concentrations of the 7S domain of type IV collagen and of the P2 fragment of laminin were determined with radioimmunoassays in the muscles of rats aged 1, 2, 4, 10, and 24 months. The concentration of type IV collagen was higher in MS than in MRF and increased significantly with age. At older ages, the concentration tended to be higher in the MS of trained than untrained rats. The concentration of laminin was significantly higher in MRF than in…

Greater Strength Gains after Training with Accentuated Eccentric than Traditional Isoinertial Loads in Already Strength-Trained Men

2016

As training experience increases it becomes more challenging to induce further neuromuscular adaptation. Consequently, strength trainers seek alternative training methods in order to further increase strength and muscle mass. One method is to utilize accentuated eccentric loading, which applies a greater external load during the eccentric phase of the lift as compared to the concentric phase. Based upon this practice, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 10 weeks of accentuated eccentric loading vs. traditional isoinertial resistance training in strength-trained men. Young (22 ± 3 years, 177 ± 6 cm, 76 ± 10 kg, n = 28) strength-trained men (2.6 ± 2.2 years experience) w…
