Merit, Competition, Distinction

The article presents a critique of competition by introducing a concept called 'distinction'. Competition is thought to work as a guarantee of the fairness of meritocratic procedures (merit-based recruiting in the job market or e.g. entrance examinations). However, fairness created by competition is, even at its best, only relative. This critique is then used a part of a larger critique of the role of merit in society.

Gender equality has not been achieved anywhere in the world. One persistent, global challenge is that women struggle to advance to management positions in the workplace. This chapter focuses on the area of management as it relates to women’s careers. Well-known metaphors that highlight the complexity of the problems women face in their careers are presented. Additionally, two examples of practices that can be helpful to the advancement of women’s careers, namely, all-women management development programmes and work-family arrangements are discussed. Tutkimukseni tehtävänä oli tarkastella uusliberalististen vastuuodotusten sekä työmarkkinoiden feminisoitumisen vaikutusta nuorten naisten kouluttautumiseen ja työmarkkinoille siirtymiseen. Painopiste tutkimuksessa on nuorissa korkeasti koulutetuissa naisissa sekä heidän kokemuksissaan ja näkemyksissään uralla etenemisessä. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty teemahaastattelulla kahdeltatoista 26−32 -vuotiaalta naiselta, jotka ovat pian valmistumassa yliopistosta tai juuri suorittaneet yliopistotutkinnon. This thesis reports four empirical studies analysing gender differences in unemployment in Finland. The studies are preceded by an introductory chapter providing a brief look at the theoretical background of these studies, outlining the content and presenting the main results of the thesis. Vuoden 1997 työmarkkinatukiuudistuksen tavoitteena oli aktivoida alle 25-vuotiaiden ammattikouluttamattomien nuorten osallistumista työmarkkinoille ja koulutukseen. Tässä artikkelissa raportoidaan arvioita uudistuksen vaikutuksista 22–24-vuotiaiden NEET-asteeseen, joka mittaa työvoiman ulkopuolella ja työttömänä olevien osuutta ikäryhmästä. Tilastollisessa tarkastelussa hyödynnetään Tilastokeskuksen rekisteriaineistoa. Regional concentration of university graduates : The role of high school grades and parental background

In this paper, we analyse long-term changes in the regional distribution and migration flows of university graduates in Finland and Sweden. This study is based on detailed longitudinal population register data, including information on high school grades and parental background. We find a distinct pattern of skill divergence across regions in both countries over the last 3 decades. The uneven distribution of human capital has been reinforced by the mobility patterns of university graduates, for whom regional sorting by high school grades and parental background is evident.
