A functional variant of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) moderates impulsive choice in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder boys and sibli…
2011
Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Impulsive drive for immediate reward (IDIR) and delay aversion are dissociable elements of the preference for immediate over delayed rewards seen in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We hypothesized that IDIR would be associated with dopamine regulating genes and delay aversion would be associated with serotonin-regulating genes. METHODS: Impulsive drive for immediate reward and delay aversion were measured in 459 male children and adolescents (328 ADHD and 131 unaffected siblings) with a laboratory choice task. The sample was genotyped for the 5HTT (SLC6A4) promoter serotonin-transporter-linked polymorphic region polymorphism and a …
(p,q)-summing sequences
2002
Abstract A sequence (x j ) in a Banach space X is (p,q) -summing if for any weakly q -summable sequence (x j ∗ ) in the dual space we get a p -summable sequence of scalars (x j ∗ (x j )) . We consider the spaces formed by these sequences, relating them to the theory of (p,q) -summing operators. We give a characterization of the case p=1 in terms of integral operators, and show how these spaces are relevant for a general question on Banach spaces and their duals, in connection with Grothendieck theorem.
Lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia. A new technique for treatment with botulinum toxin guided by electromyography and arthroscopy
2010
Lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia is characterized by mandibular displacement towards the opposite side of the affected muscle. It may be associated with functional disorders affecting speech, swallowing, chewing and facial symmetry. Injection with botulinum toxin is recognized as the most effective treatment. Locating the lower head of the lateral pterygoid muscle for the injection is not difficult using electromyographic guidance; however, location of the upper head is more complicated, even with electromyography. We report a case of lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia in which precise injection of the upper head was achieved with the aid of arthroscopy.
Palmitoylation of Endothelin Receptor A
1996
Post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and palmitoylation play important roles for the function and regulation of receptors coupled to heterotrimeric guanyl nucleotide-binding proteins. Here we demonstrate that the human endothelin receptor A (ETA) incorporates [3H]palmitate. Mutation of a cluster of five cysteine residues present in the cytoplasmic tail of ETA into serine or alanine residues completely prevented palmitoylation of the receptor. The ligand binding affinity of the non-palmitoylated ETA mutants was essentially unchanged as compared to the palmitoylated wild type ETA suggesting that the replacement of the cysteine residues did not alter the overall structure o…
Born entrepreneurs? : Adolescents’ personality characteristics and entrepreneurship in adulthood
2017
Is there an entrepreneurial personality, and does it appear early in life? We provide a new answer to this important question by examining traits related to Type A behavior (Aggression, Leadership, Responsibility, and Eagerness-Energy) measured during adolescence and their relationship to entrepreneurship propensity in adulthood. The results indicate that the early-life Leadership dimension is significantly associated with a higher likelihood of 1) becoming an entrepreneur and 2) being more successful as an entrepreneur, as approximated by sales. peerReviewed
Can “Type A Behaviour” Predict Health Risk Behavior for Romanian Youth?
2015
Abstract We use a Romanian sample of 535 males and 824 females, in order to test JAS capacity to predict health risk behaviour, like smoking or unsafe sexual activity. Data analysis reveals a low capacity of this test to predict targeted behaviour and should be used only with precaution. People scoring high on JAS appear to start early sexual life and to feel confortable with that. They smoke a significant bigger number of cigarettes and report a bigger number of sexual partners. They also appear to quit school early in a bigger proportion than people with low JAS score.
Particularities of Grey Alder (Alnus incana) Stands in Riparian Galleries Along Streams of the Southern Transylvanian Tableland (Romania)
2019
Abstract Grey Alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench.) stands are distributed in the Carpathian area on alluvial deposits with sediments of different grain size as galleries along rivers and streams of the sub-montane to the middle montane level. The geological structure (Tertiary sedimentary deposits) in relation to the hydromorphological processes is the base for the structure of the stream valleys, which are in part very deep. Under the special microclimate of these deeper stream stretches with lower temperatures there are favourable conditions for the development of grey alder stands.
Large diurnal variation of intraocular pressure in open angle glaucoma in subjects with type A behaviour pattern
2014
Aim : To evaluate the possible causes of the greater perimetric damage found in OAG subjects with type A behaviour and the possible role of psycho-physiological stress. Materials and methods : 80 patients with OAG, 44 women and 36 men, 40 with type A behaviour and 40 with type B studied with the Type A/B Personality Questionnaire (A modified version of the Jenkins Activity Survey), underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination consisting of bio-microscopy, tonometry and daily tonometric curve, examination of the visual field by means of Octopus 1-2-3 computerised perimeter and its assessment with the Glaucoma Staging System 2 (GSS2), morphological monitoring of the Retinal Nerve Fibre Lay…
PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL AROUSAL RELATED TO TYPE-A COMPONENTS IN ADOLESCENT BOYS
1995
The association between psychophysiological responses (heart rate, skin conductance and blood volume) and Type A behavior was studied in adolescent boys (n = 48) in computer-controlled experiments. Although psychophysiological arousal was related to the type of stress-evoking element, task-specificity did not result in significant psychophysiological differences between Type As and Nontype As. The indication is that physiological arousal may be a constitutional characteristic of Type A behavior. The multidimensionality of type A behavior must be considered in any investigation examining the psychophysiological Type A-Nontype A differences. Different Type A dimensions, together with previous…
4843delC of the BRCA1 gene is a possible founder mutation in Southern Italy (Sicily).
2007
Various studies have been published in Italy regarding the different BRCA1 mutations, but only the BRCA1-5083del19 mutation is recurrent and specific to individuals of Italian descent with a founder effect on the Calabrian population. In our previous study, BRCA1-5083del19 mutation carriers were found in four index cases of 106 Sicilian patients selected for familial and/or hereditary breast/ovarian cancers. The high frequency rate of this mutation identified in the Sicilian population led us to perform haplotype analysis in all family carriers. Five highly polymorphic microsatellite markers were used (D17S1320, D17S932, D17S1323, D17S1326, D17S1325) to establish whether or not all these fa…
