Molecular Typing Reveals Frequent Clustering among Human Isolates of Listeria monocytogenes in Italy
2009
In Italy, the annual incidence of reported cases of listeriosis amounts in recent years (2004 to 2006) to 0.8 cases per million inhabitants. Our study is a subtyping analysis by serotyping, ribotyping, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis of 44 human isolates from apparently sporadic cases of infection in the Lombardy region and in the Province of Florence, Italy, in the years 1996 to 2007. Based on the results of the different subtyping methods, 10 occasions were detected when strains of L. monocytogenes with the same subtype were isolated from more than one listeriosis case. A total of 28 (66.7%) out of 44 isolates were attributed to molecular subtype clusters. Our data support t…
Infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa: relatively frequent isolation of serogroup 12 from clinical specimens.
1985
Serological typing of P. aeruginosa is the most simple and reliable procedure recommended for ≪ in-house ≫ investigations and for studies of suspected outbreaks of infection by this microorganism. It is also a useful procedure in order to know serotype prevalence in a definite geografical area and to obtain indications about the more appropriate composition of polivalent anti-Pseudomonas vaccines. In the present report, we describe the relatively high frequency of isolation of serogroup 12 from patients in Palermo, Italy. Serogroup 12 is very rare in north-Europe and in the USA, and, as a consequence, it is not included in some vaccine preparations. In Palermo, strains belonging to this ser…
Characterization of the first extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing nontyphoidal Salmonella strains isolated in Tehran, Iran.
2009
The infections caused by Salmonella remain a significant public health problem throughout the world. beta-Lactams and fluoroquinolones are generally used to treat invasive Salmonella infections, but emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant strains are being increasingly notified in many countries. In particular, detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Salmonella spp. is a newly emerging threat worldwide. This study was carried out to characterize beta-lactamase-producing Salmonella strains identified in Tehran, Iran. Over the 2-year period from 2007 to 2008, 6 of 136 Salmonella isolates recovered from pediatrics patients, including three Salmonella enterica serotypes E…
APPROACHES TO STUDY BIODIVERSITY AND SALINITY TOLERANCE MECHANISMS IN MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT TREE SPECIES
Changes in global climate are going to increase the problem of drought and soil salinity in the Mediterranean area, where increases in temperature, drought and soil and water salinity are expected. Identification of plant genotypes with positive agronomic traits, such as salt tolerance, may reduce the effects of salinity and drought on productivity. Therefore, there is considerable effort being directed toward the development of salt-tolerant genotypes through plant breeding, with the aim to the introgression of salt-tolerance traits into new cultivars. The results presented in this thesis contributed to the develop of new tools to improve knowledge on the biodiversity and salinity toleranc…
Analysis of Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip data in different Italian cattle breeds to identify useful markers for breed authentication of dairy and be…
2013
The identification of the breed of origin of cattle derived products has recently assumed particular relevance since the increasing interest in marketing mono-breed labelled cheese and beef. These products are usually sold at a higher price creating financial incentives to substituting them with lower value products coming from undifferentiated or common breeds or crossbred animals. Frauds can damage these valuable niche markets that, indirectly, may help to preserve genetic diversity through the economic incentive on raising local breeds, derived by the high value products, that are usually less productive. DNA analysis can help to identify fraudulent behaviour as we already demonstrated f…

ConformalALU: A Conformal Geometric Algebra Coprocessor for Medical Image Processing
2015
Medical imaging involves important computational geometric problems, such as image segmentation and analysis, shape approximation, three-dimensional (3D) modeling, and registration of volumetric data. In the last few years, Conformal Geometric Algebra (CGA), based on five-dimensional (5D) Clifford Algebra, is emerging as a new paradigm that offers simple and universal operators for the representation and solution of complex geometric problems. However, the widespread use of CGA has been so far hindered by its high dimensionality and computational complexity. This paper proposes a simplified formulation of the conformal geometric operations (reflections, rotations, translations, and uniform …
A Sliced Coprocessor for Native Clifford Algebra Operations
2007
Computer graphics applications require efficient tools to model geometric objects. The traditional approach based on compute-intensive matrix calculations is error-prone due to a lack of integration between geometric reasoning and matrix-based algorithms. Clifford algebra offers a solution to these issues since it permits specification of geometry at a coordinate-free level. The best way to exploit the symbolic computing power of geometric (Clifford) algebra is supporting its data types and operators directly in hardware. This paper outlines the architecture of S-CliffoSor (Sliced Clifford coprocessor), a parallelizable embedded coprocessor that executes native Clifford algebra operations. …
Design and implementation of an embedded coprocessor with native support for 5D, quadruple-based Clifford algebra
2013
Geometric or Clifford algebra (CA) is a powerful mathematical tool that offers a natural and intuitive way to model geometric facts in a number of research fields, such as robotics, machine vision, and computer graphics. Operating in higher dimensional spaces, its practical use is hindered, however, by a significant computational cost, only partially addressed by dedicated software libraries and hardware/software codesigns. For low-dimensional algebras, several dedicated hardware accelerators and coprocessing architectures have been already proposed in the literature. This paper introduces the architecture of CliffordALU5, an embedded coprocessing core conceived for native execution of up t…
