Community and space in Italian sociolinguistics. The experience of the <i>Linguistic Atlas of Sicily</i> (<i>Atlante Linguistico de…

2018

Our paper focuses on the notions of ‘space’ and ‘community’ within the most recent developments of Italian sociolinguistics. This research area has roots in the tradition of Italian geolinguistic studies and has been enhanced by other research traditions. In fact, Italian sociolinguistics has reused the relationship between ‘community’ and ‘space’ investigated in the early twentieth century by Benvenuto Terracini’s (1886–1968) seminal studies on ‘minimal linguistic point’ (‘punto linguistico minimo’) and on ‘community of speakers’. Since the 1970s and, with more weight, in the last decades, some important contributions coming from scholars such as Alberto Sobrero, Tullio Telmon and Giovanni…

Trajectories of change in reading self-efficacy: A longitudinal analysis of self-efficacy and its sources

2021

The beliefs children hold about their capabilities as readers are known to influence their reading achievement. The aim of this study was to extend previous work by examining trajectories of change in reading self-efficacy among primary school students (N = 1327) and the relations between the trajectories of self-efficacy and their hypothesized sources over 11 months. Using growth mixture modeling, we identified four trajectories of change in reading self-efficacy, involving increasing, stable, and declining trends. These trajectories of change in reading self-efficacy were associated with students’ varying experiences with the four sources of self-efficacy over time. Higher levels of maste…

Husserl’s Concept of “Intentionality” as the Starting Point for Sartre’s Thinking

1991

The influence of Phenomenology, especially that of Husserl, is extremely important in Sartre’s thinking, particularly in the first period which reaches its high point with the phenomenological ontology expounded in L’etre et le neant.

Hilbert’s Legacy: Projecting the Future and Assessing the Past at the 1946 Princeton Bicentennial Conference

2018

Saunders Mac Lane on Solomon Lefschetz (Mac Lane 1989, 220): In 1940 when he was writing his second book on topology, [Lefschetz] sent drafts of one section up to Whitney and Mac Lane at Harvard. The drafts were incorrect, we wrote back saying so – and every day for the next seven or eight days we received a new message from Lefschetz, with a new proposed version. It is no wonder that the local ditty about Lefschetz ran as follows: Here’s to Lefschetz, Solomon L Ir-re-pres-si-ble as hell When he’s at last beneath the sod He’ll then begin to heckle God.

Stories of professional development in physiotherapy education

2021

This study examines graduating physiotherapy students' narratives related to their professional development. The data comprised interviews with 33 graduating physiotherapy students. The data were analyzed using the narrative analysis approach. As a result, five different story models were identified. The descriptive story models were named: 1) "Study path dominated by life changes"; 2) "Realizing the connection between physiotherapy theory and practice"; 3) "Self-regulated and practical-oriented learning path"; 4) "Becoming a critical developer"; and 5) "Multiprofessional working towards expertise". In students' stories, there appeared different turning points that illustrated especially me…

Focus on statistical physics modeling in economics and finance

2011

This focus issue presents a collection of papers on recent results in statistical physics modeling in economics and finance, commonly known as econophysics. We touch briefly on the history of this relatively new multi-disciplinary field, summarize the motivations behind its emergence and try to characterize its specific features. We point out some research aspects that must be improved and briefly discuss the topics the research field is moving toward. Finally, we give a short account of the papers collected in this issue.

Measurement of the b → τ-ν̄τX branching ratio

1993

The definitions of “anthropology” found in various dictionaries cover a whole range of terms and in this section we provide an overview of all its connotations. In this way a variety of reflections about the essence of man become possible, for instance as : summit of creation; source of his own values; specific biological reality; intelligence (but what is this, really?); knowing subject or object of knowledge; social being and product of a culture. Following these lines of thought one realises that all these preoccupations have already been taken up, or at least touched upon, by communication theory.

Design criteria for multi-layered scintillating fibre arrays with inclined columns

2008

Multi-layered scintillating fibre arrays read-out are commonly used as high resolution charged particle hodoscopes. Fibres of a column along the geometrical trajectory of incident particles are typically grouped to one pixel of a multi-channel read-out device. In some applications the incident particles will cross the detection plane with large angles w.r.t. the normal to the layers. Then, the packing of the fibres needs to be adapted to the incident particles and the columns need to be inclined. In this paper possible fibre array geometries are shown, relevant design criteria for detectors are discussed, and the effect of diverging particles incident on fibre arrays was studied using a Mon…
