THE USE OF ARGENTUM-QUARTZ SOLUTION IN PRIMARY OR RECURRENT PERIANAL FISTULAS: FIRST EXPERIENCE ON THREE CASES
2019
Primary perianal fistulous pathology represents a painful condition often noticeable in patients affected by Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis. It causes difficult defecation and can evolve in perianal abscess that should be urgently ascertained and drained. The present work aims to propose Argentum-Quartz® as valid non-surgical therapeutic treatment in order to reach a more comfortable perianal fistula healing. In fact, our preliminary data allow us to consider Argentum Quartz® ideally employable for treatment of perianal fistulas associated or not with IBDs, representing a reliable sphincter-sparing solution.
Fear of hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes: The role of interoceptive accuracy and prior episodes of hypoglycemia.
2017
Abstract Objective Fear of hypoglycemia (FoH) is a limiting factor for diabetes self-management and can have detrimental effects on quality of life. However, relatively little is known about its underlying mechanisms. In line with findings on patients with anxiety disorders, we hypothesized that interoceptive accuracy (IA) might be positively linked to FoH in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods 133 patients with T2DM were screened according to the extreme quartiles of the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey worry subscale (HFS-W). Overall, 66 participants (HFS-W 17) were included in the present study. Participants completed questionnaires on sociodemographic and diabetes-related measures. …
Perception of Occlusion, Psychological Impact of Dental Esthetics, History of Orthodontic Treatment and Their Relation to Oral Health in Naval Recrui…
2007
Abstract Objective: To investigate whether the oral health of young male adults was related to (1) the degree of self-perceived malocclusion, (2) the degree of experienced negative psychosocial impact of dental esthetics, and (3) the history of orthodontic treatment and its duration. Materials and Methods: The study subjects were 470 male naval recruits undergoing a routine dental health checkup. They answered the Perception of Occlusion Scale (POS) and Negative Impact of Dental Aesthetics Scale (NIDAS). The Approximal Plaque Index (API), the Sulcus Bleeding Index (SBI), and the number of decayed teeth (DT) and missing teeth (MT) were examined by a staff dentist. Statistical procedures were…
[Arterial hypertension and prediabetes].
2016
Abstract Background and objectives The aim of this study was to assess the factors related to new diabetes in hypertensive. Patients and methods This prospective follow-up study involved 2588 non-diabetic, hypertensive patients. The total follow-up was 15,053 patient-years with a median of 3.4 years (interquartile interval 1.4–6.8). Results During the follow-up, 333 (13%) patients had new diabetes, with a conversion rate of 2.21 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.98–2.46) 100/patients/year. In a Cox proportional hazard model including baseline characteristics and modifications during the follow-up the three components of metabolic syndrome (excluding blood pressure and glucose values) HR 1.69…
Association of intrathecal pleocytosis and IgG synthesis with axonal damage in early MS
2020
ObjectiveTo investigate the association of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) levels with CSF parameters in clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and early relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), taking into account radiologic and clinical parameters of disease activity.MethodsSimultaneously collected serum and CSF samples of 112 untreated patients newly diagnosed with CIS or RRMS were included in this cross-sectional study. CSF parameters were obtained as part of routine diagnostic tests. sNfL levels of patients and of 62 healthy donors were measured by highly sensitive single molecule array (SiMoA) immunoassay.ResultsPatients with RRMS (n = 91, median 10.13 pg/mL, interquartile range [IQR] 6.67–1…
Utility of presepsin (sCD14-ST) as a diagnostic and prognostic marker of sepsis in the emergency department
2015
Presepsin (PSEP) is released during infectious diseases and can be detected in the blood. PSEP has shown promising results as sepsis marker. We examined the diagnostic and prognostic validity of PSEP in patients suspicious of sepsis on admission in the emergency department (ED). Methods One hundred twenty three patients with signs of SIRS and/or sepsis and 123 healthy individuals were enrolled. PSEP was determined on admission, after 8, 24 and 72 h. Results Mean PSEP concentrations of the control group and the patient group were 130 and 1945 pg/ml. PSEP differed between SIRS, sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock and showed strong association with 30-day mortality ranging from 10.3% in the…
Regression of left ventricular hypertrophy and microalbuminuria changes during antihypertensive treatment.
2013
The objective of the present study was to assess the regression of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) during antihypertensive treatment, and its relationship with the changes in microalbuminuria. One hundred and sixty-eight previously untreated patients with echocardiographic LVH, 46 (27%) with microalbuminuria, were followed during a median period of 13 months (range 6-23 months) and treated with lifestyle changes and antihypertensive drugs. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography and urinary albumin excretion were assessed at the beginning and at the end of the study period.Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was reduced from 137 [interquartile interval (IQI)…
Acetyl-dl-leucine in Niemann-Pick type C
2015
Objective: To assess the effects of the modified amino acid acetyl-dl-leucine (AL) on cerebellar ataxia, eye movements, and quality of life of patients with Niemann-Pick type C (NP-C) disease. Methods: Twelve patients with NP-C disease were treated with AL 3 g/d for 1 week and then with 5 g/d for 3 weeks with a subsequent washout period of 1 month. The Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA), the Spinocerebellar Ataxia Functional Index (SCAFI), the modified Disability Rating Scale (mDRS), EuroQol 5Q-5D-5L, and the visual analog scale (VAS) were administered. Measurements took place at baseline, after 1 month of therapy, and after 1 month of washout. Results: The SARA score chan…
Validity criteria for the diagnosis of fatty liver by M probe-based controlled attenuation parameter.
2017
Background & Aims Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) can be performed together with liver stiffness measurement (LSM) by transient elastography (TE) and is often used to diagnose fatty liver. We aimed to define the validity criteria of CAP. Methods CAP was measured by the M probe prior to liver biopsy in 754 consecutive patients with different liver diseases at three centers in Europe and Hong Kong (derivation cohort, n = 340; validation cohort, n = 414; 101 chronic hepatitis B, 154 chronic hepatitis C, 349 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, 37 autoimmune hepatitis, 49 cholestatic liver disease, 64 others; 277 F3-4; age 52 ± 14; body mass index 27.2 ± 5.3 kg/m2). The primary outco…
Further Neuroimaging Evidence for the Deficit Subtype of Schizophrenia
2015
The clinical heterogeneity of schizophrenia has hindered neurobiological investigations aimed at identifying neural correlates of the disorder. To identify network-based biomarkers across the spectrum of impairment present in schizophrenia by separately evaluating individuals with deficit and nondeficit subtypes of this disorder.A university hospital network-based neuroimaging study was conducted between February 1, 2007, and February 28, 2012. Participants included patients with schizophrenia (n = 128) and matched healthy controls (n = 130) from two academic centers and patients with bipolar I disorder (n = 39) and matched healthy controls (n = 43) from a third site. Patients with schizophr…
