The equilibrium structure and fundamental vibrational frequencies of dioxirane

1998

Complete sets of quadratic and cubic force constants calculated for four isotopomers of dioxirane (CH2OO) are used to estimate vibration-rotation interaction contributions to observed values of rotational constants (B″), thereby yielding empirical estimates of the corresponding equilibrium values (Be). At the highest levels of theory, least-squares refinements of atomic coordinates to both the empirical Be values and the associated isotope shifts yield consistent sets of structural parameters. Recommended values are re(CO)=1.3846±0.0005 A; re(OO)=1.5133±0.0005 A; re(CH)=1.0853±0.0015 A and θe(HCH)=117.03±0.20°. Post-Enlargement Return Migrants' Earnings Premium: Evidence from Latvia

2008

The paper exploits a recent survey of over ten thousand economically active residents of Latvia; about 5% of respondents have worked abroad over the last three years, while 12% have family members with such experience. Post-enlargement labor migration from Latvia has been predominantly low-skilled, yet return migrants when compared to stayers are, on average, more educated and less likely to work as unskilled manuals. We combine instrumental variable and propensity score matching methods to study the effect of foreign experience on earnings. Results suggest that return migrants are neither positively nor negatively selected in terms of earnings. However, after controlling for worker demogra…

Zola «onomaturge»: le sens et la portée symbolique des anthroponymes dans "Les Rougon-Macquart"

2016

Throughout the twenty volumes of his monumental novel series, Emile Zola carefully chose his characters’ family names and given names, looking for clues in authentic documents or inventing some new anthroponyms himself. The main principle of the relation between a character and his/her family name is the name’s meaning and the symbolical significance hidden in its phonetic and semantic structure. As far as the given names are concerned, their choice usually seems to be determined by irony, the writer’s favorite literary technique.

The role of informal learning in adults' literacy proficiency

2021

This study used the Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) dataset to examine informal literacy learning’s effects on adults’ literacy proficiency. Also, the factors associated with informal literacy learning at and outside of work were studied. The study participants were Nordic adults aged 35–65 years. The statistical method was regression analysis, and the results indicate that informal literacy activities at work are associated primarily with occupation, and informal literacy activities outside of work with education, parents’ education and gender. Initial education, occupation, language background and age exerted the strongest estimated associations with r…

Shear sense indicators in striped bedding-veins

2000

Striped bedding-veins are veins that lie subparallel to bedding and have an internal layering or lineation at a small angle to the veins’ long axis. They form during bedding-parallel slip and can be used as shear sense indicators. Solid inclusion trails produce the visible internal layering or lineation and track the opening direction of the veins. Elongate quartz crystals however can be oriented at an angle of up to 80° to the opening direction, are non-tracking, and contain almost no information on the shear sense. The striped bedding-veins can be separated into three types according to the geometry of their internal segmentation. Veins of type B opened parallel to jogs oriented at a low …

Quantification of the Raf-C1 Interaction With Solid-Supported Bilayers

2002

By use of the quartz crystal microbalance technique, the interaction of the Raf-Ras binding domain (RafRBD) and the cysteine-rich domain Raf-C1 with lipids was quantified by using solid-supported bilayers immobilized on gold electrodes deposited on 5 MHz quartz plates. Solid-supported lipid bilayers were composed of an initial octanethiol monolayer chemisorbed on gold and a physisorbed phospholipid monolayer varying in its lipid composition as the outermost layer. The integrity of bilayer preparation was monitored by impedance spectroscopy. For binding experiments, a protein construct comprising the RafRBD and Raf-C1 linked to the maltose binding protein and a His tag, termed MBP-Raf-C1, wa…

Adhesion of liposomes: a quartz crystal microbalance study

2003

Three different systems are presented, exploring the adhesion of liposomes mediated by electrostatic and lipid–protein interactions as well as molecular recognition of ligand receptor pairs. Liposomes are frequently used to gain insight into the complicated processes involving adhesion and subsequent events such as fusion and fission mainly triggered by specific proteins. We combined liposome technology with the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique as a powerful tool to study the hidden interface between the membrane and functionalized surface. Electrostatic attraction and molecular recognition were employed to bind liposomes to the functionalized quartz crystal. The QCM was used to …
