Quasispecies dynamics and fixation of a synonymous mutation in hantavirus transmission.
2008
RNA-dependent RNA polymerases, the key enzymes in replication of RNA viruses, have a low fidelity; thus, these viruses replicate as a swarm of mutants termed viral quasispecies. Constant generation of new mutations allows RNA viruses to adapt swiftly to a novel environment through selection of both pre-existing and de novo-generated genetic variants. Here, quasispecies dynamics were studied in vivo in controlled hantavirus transmission from experimentally infected to naïve rodents through infested cage bedding. An elementary step of virus microevolution was apparent, as one synonymous mutation (A759G) repeatedly became fixed in the viral RNA quasispecies populations in the recipient animals.
Biological Nutrient Removal Model No. 2 (BNRM2): a general model for wastewater treatment plants
2013
This paper presents the plant-wide model Biological Nutrient Removal Model No. 2 (BNRM2). Since nitrite was not considered in the BNRM1, and this previous model also failed to accurately simulate the anaerobic digestion because precipitation processes were not considered, an extension of BNRM1 has been developed. This extension comprises all the components and processes required to simulate nitrogen removal via nitrite and the formation of the solids most likely to precipitate in anaerobic digesters. The solids considered in BNRM2 are: struvite, amorphous calcium phosphate, hidroxyapatite, newberite, vivianite, strengite, variscite, and calcium carbonate. With regard to nitrogen removal via…
Supporting Inter-Agency Collaboration in Emergency Management: Recurring Challenges Relevant for CSCW
2023
Emergency management requires effective collaboration between different agencies. This work implies several challenges due to a heterogeneous mix of actors with different procedures, practices, and support tools. Despite being focused in various research streams, emergency responders still report challenges with sharing information and establishing shared situational awareness in responding to complex events. The paper presents results from a large-scale digital tabletop exercise that illustrate recurring challenges related to support for collaborative procedures, a communication network structure combining several media, use of geocollaborative tools, and configuration of collaborative env…

Bi-Sobolev extensions
2022
We give a full characterization of circle homeomorphisms which admit a homeomorphic extension to the unit disk with finite bi-Sobolev norm. As a special case, a bi-conformal variant of the famous Beurling-Ahlfors extension theorem is obtained. Furthermore we show that the existing extension techniques such as applying either the harmonic or the Beurling-Ahlfors operator work poorly in the degenerated setting. This also gives an affirmative answer to a question of Karafyllia and Ntalampekos.
Uniform, Sobolev extension and quasiconformal circle domains
1991
This paper contributes to the theory of uniform domains and Sobolev extension domains. We present new features of these domains and exhibit numerous relations among them. We examine two types of Sobolev extension domains, demonstrate their equivalence for bounded domains and generalize known sufficient geometric conditions for them. We observe that in the plane essentially all of these domains possess the trait that there is a quasiconformal self-homeomorphism of the extended plane which maps a given domain conformally onto a circle domain. We establish a geometric condition enjoyed by these plane domains which characterizes them among all quasicircle domains having no large and no small bo…
Analytic capacity and quasiconformal mappings with $W^{1,2}$ Beltrami coefficient
2008
We show that if $\phi$ is a quasiconformal mapping with compactly supported Beltrami coefficient in the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}$, then $\phi$ preserves sets with vanishing analytic capacity. It then follows that a compact set $E$ is removable for bounded analytic functions if and only if it is removable for bounded quasiregular mappings with compactly supported Beltrami coefficient in $W^{1,2}$.

AUTOFOCALIZZAZIONE VIA RANDOM QUASI-PHASE-MATCHING IN GUIDE D’ONDA DI TANTALATO di LITIO
2010
We observe self-localization of light beams via second harmonic generation in a quasi-phase-matched proton-exchanged Lithium Tantalate slab waveguide in the presence of a random component of the periodically-poled grating.
