Effects of (+)-tubocurarine on [3H]acetylcholine release from the rat phrenic nerve at different stimulation frequencies and train lengths
1987
The effect of (+)-tubocurarine (TC) on the release of [3H]acetylcholine from the rat phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preincubated with [3H]choline was investigated at different stimulation frequencies and train lengths. At 0.5 Hz (100 pulses) TC failed to modulate the evoked acetylcholine release. A slight (30%) inhibition was observed at 1 Hz (100 pulses). Release of acetylcholine evoked at 5, 25 and 50 Hz (100 pulses) or 100 Hz (200 pulses) was markedly reduced by TC. The degree of inhibition (60%) was similar between 5 Hz and 100 Hz. A concentration of 1 mumol/l TC was a maximal effective concentration at 5 Hz whilst at all higher stimulation frequencies a 10-fold higher concentration was ne…

ChemInform Abstract: A Photocurrent Spectroscopic Study of the Initial Stages of Anodic Oxide Film Formation on Niobium.
2010
Abstract An extensive electrochemical and photoelectrochemical investigation has been carried out with very thin anodic oxide layers grown on niobium metal in sulphuric acid solutions. From the experiments the presence of an initial suboxide layer on the metal surface was inferred. Upon anodic polarization a strongly non-stoichiometric pentoxide film is formed, which is subsequently oxidized to the normal amorphous pentoxide phase (a-Nb 2 O 5 ). The use of photocurrent spectroscopy (PCS) allowed this oxidation process to be followed at various potentials and polarization times. Moreover, from the experimental results we obtain information both on the composition and the solid-state structur…
There's more to volatility than volume
2006
It is widely believed that fluctuations in transaction volume, as reflected in the number of transactions and to a lesser extent their size, are the main cause of clustered volatility. Under this view bursts of rapid or slow price diffusion reflect bursts of frequent or less frequent trading, which cause both clustered volatility and heavy tails in price returns. We investigate this hypothesis using tick by tick data from the New York and London Stock Exchanges and show that only a small fraction of volatility fluctuations are explained in this manner. Clustered volatility is still very strong even if price changes are recorded on intervals in which the total transaction volume or number of…
Making Telescopes and Partying with the Stars: Amateur Astronomy in Spain during Franco’s Dictatorship
2016
Franco’s dictatorship was characterized by an official narrative that criminalized the liberal tradition of previous periods. Such a discourse defined an ideologically correct science that censured the subordination of Spanish science to foreign influence and sought to create a new scientific tradition. However, recent studies have revised these aims and suggest that there was a continuity of scientific and technological programmes and practices before and after the Spanish Civil War. This paper contributes to these investigations with further evidence, focusing on several practices that characterized the development of amateur astronomy during this period. Special attention is paid to the…
Intraband and interband spin-orbit torques in noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets
2015
Intraband and interband contributions to the current-driven spin-orbit torque in magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry are theoretically studied using Kubo formula. In addition to the current-driven field-like torque ${\bf T}_{\rm FL}= \tau_{\rm FL}{\bf m}\times{\bf u}_{\rm so}$ (${\bf u}_{\rm so}$ being a unit vector determined by the symmetry of the spin-orbit coupling), we explore the intrinsic contribution arising from impurity-independent interband transitions and producing an anti-damping-like torque of the form ${\bf T}_{\rm DL}= \tau_{\rm DL}{\bf m}\times({\bf u}_{\rm so}\times{\bf m})$. Analytical expressions are obtained in the model case of a magnetic Rashba two-dimension…
Odd-even staggering in simple models of metal clusters
1994
The odd-even staggering of free-electron metal clusters is studied using several simple models: Noninter-acting electrons in a rectangular box, triaxial harmonic oscillator, and Huckel model. Finite temperature effects are studied using the Monte Carlo method. All the models show qualitatively similar odd-even staggering. In the ground state the HOMO-LUMO gap is larger than the neighbouring energy gaps. The reduction of the odd-even staggering due to exchange and correlation is studied using the local-spin-density approximation.
