This qualitative study investigated the various linguistic, contextual, and experiential equivalence issues embedded in a performance-based instrument aimed at assessing generic skills in higher education. A rigorous translation and adaptation process (American English to Finnish) was conducted on one instrument, namely Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) International. The data were obtained from cognitive laboratories (n = 13), with think-alouds and follow-up interviews conducted among Finnish undergraduate students. AbstractCompared to the extensive amount of literature on various themes of W.V.O. Quine’s philosophy, his immanent concept of truth remains a relatively unexplored topic. This relative lack of research contributes to a persistent confusion on the deflationary and inflationary details of Quine’s truth. According to a popular reading, Quine’s disquotational definition of the truth predicate exhausts the topic of truth, thus amounting to a deflationary view. Others promote opposing interpretations. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to explore the influence of neighborhood-level variables on the spatial and spatio-temporal distribution of different social problems in the city of Valencia. In Study 1, we present data on the development and validation of an observational instrument to assess neighborhood disorder. Results supported a three-factor model (physical disorder, social disorder and physical deterioration), and they showed good reliability and validity evidences. During the talk we will give a necessary and sufficient condition for the uniqueness of a penalized least squares estimator whose penalty term is a polyhedral norm. Our results cover many methods including the OSCAR, SLOPE and LASSO estimators as well as the related method of basis pursuit. The geometrical condition for uniqueness involves how the row span of the design matrix intersects the faces of the dual normunit ball. Theoretical results on sparsity by LASSO and basis pursuit estimators are deduced from this condition via the characterization of accessible sign vectors for these two methods.
Morālās spriešanas saistība ar altruismu

Šā pētījuma mērķis bija izzināt, vai pastāv un kāda ir morālās spriešanas un altruisma saistība pieaugušo izlasē (18–64 gadi). Tika izvirzīti divi pētījuma jautājumi. Pirmkārt, vai un kāda saistība pastāv starp morālo spriešanu un altruismu? Otrkārt, kā morālā spriešana prognozē altruismu, kontrolējot vecumu, dzimumu un izglītības līmeni? Kopā pētījumā piedalījās 315 respondenti. Lai atbildētu uz pētījuma jautājumiem, tika izvēlēts Morālo spriedumu tests un Altruisma pašaptaujas skala. Rezultāti rāda, ka pastāv negatīva un ļoti vāja saistība starp morālo spriešanu, ko raksturo izvairīšanās no soda, un altruismu. Medicinal plants have been used as a source of remedies since ancient times in Egypt. The present study was designed to investigate the antibacterial activity and the cytotoxicity of the organic extracts from 16 selected medicinal plants of Egypt. The study was also extended to the isolation of the antiproliferative compound jaeschkeanadiol p-hydroxybenzoate (FH-25) from Ferula hermonis. A proposito della collocazione dell'accento su certi composti di tipo bahuvrihi in vedico e in greco antico

Una discussione sui composti non prescinde mai dalla sistemazione di essi proposta dalla grammatica indiana. Secondo la terminologia da questa introdotta i composti oggi detti possessivi erano chiamati bahuvrihi (es. hiranyaparna "dalle ali d'oro"). Il lavoro è dedicato a una specifica questione relativa alla collocazione dell'accento in certi composti del tipo bahuvrihi. Coincidenze nella collocazione dell'accento sui composti greci e indiani antichi erano già state notate da altri. Gli autori hanno provato a verificare se il fenomeno dell'accentazione del suffisso, riscontrabile nei bahuvrihi del Rig Veda, sia presente e in che termini nel greco antico.
