Background : On May 12, 2008, an earthquake with a power of 8.0 M on the Richter scale occurred in the Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province in southwest China, which was unprecedented in magnitude and aftermath. We studied six patients with giardiasis (five males, one female), median age 3.5 yr (range 1-11) and 12 healthy control subjects (10 males, 2 females), median age 3.5 yr (range 1-10). Intestinal biopsy and a contemporaneous secretin-cerulein test were performed in all patients, and fecal chymotrypsin was also assayed. Intestinal biopsy was normal in five of the six patients with giardiasis, whereas one of the six presented a partial atrophy of the intestinal villi. Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) infection was associated with important mortalities of amberjacks (Seriola dumerili) reared in tanks in the experimental facilities of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (Western Mediterranean) during the period 1998–2000. Fish infested by this parasite presented characteristics similar to those described for Seriola quinqueradiata parasitized by Heteraxine heterocerca in Japan. All dead amberjacks had high parasite abundance (mean abundance±S.D.=686.7±125.4) and egg strings entangled in gills. This working paper has a twofold goal. On one hand, it provides a recap of Linear Mixed Models (LMMs): far from trying to be exhaustive, this first part of the working paper focusses on the derivation of theoretical results on estimation of LMMs that are scattered in the literature or whose mathematical derivation is sometimes missing or too quickly sketched. On the other hand, it discusses various definitions that are available in the literature for the hat-matrix of Linear Mixed Models, showing their limitations and proving their equivalence.
