Modelling of Systems for Real

2016

Modelling and Programming are often used together in system development. However, typically there is a large difference between the handling of modelling parts and the handling of programming parts. This leads to the fact that the transition between the two is not easy, and important information is lost as well as extra information has to be provided when combining modelling and programming. This paper shows how modelling and programming could work together in system development.

“ArgumenteHin, ArgumenteHer.” Regularity and Idiomaticity in GermanN Hin,N Her

2017

This paper seeks to find the best linguistic analysis of the German semispecified, productive patternN hin, N her(for example,Krieg hin, Krieg her, es muss eine gute Show werden‘War or no war, it must be a good show’). The basic question is whether the properties ofN hin, N hercan be accounted for in a rule-based approach or whether they are to be regarded as idiosyncratic properties of this construction. One of the characteristic features ofN hin, N heris the identity of the nouns. This raises the question of whether or notN hin, N heris an instance of syntactic reduplication. It is shown that rule-based copying accounts fail when they are applied to the case ofN hin, N her. The paper argu…

Analysing metaphor in the family register through scripted sitcom conversations

2017

Abstract This study looks into the patterns of metaphor use in the family register of scripted sitcom conversations. Previous studies of metaphor in conversation adopted different approaches to the concept of register, resulting in a rich but complex picture (Cameron, 2003, 2007, 2008; Deignan, Littlemore & Semino, 2013; Kaal, 2012). This research attempts to reduce such complexity by using an approach to register based on closely defining communicative settings and the participants’ roles (Giménez-Moreno, 2006). In this way, we were able to focus on the register used by family members and close friends and the contexts of private oral communication, as opposed to other possible registe…

ROLES AND REGISTERS IN DIGITAL FORUM INTERACTION: DEVELOPING A COMMUNICATIVE IDENTITY-BASED APPROACH TO REGISTER VARIATION

2017

ABDUCTIVE INFERENCES IN PRAGMATIC PROCESSES

2018

Abstract In pragmatic theories, the notion of inference plays a central role, together with the communicative act in which it is activated. Although some scholars, such as Levinson, Sperber and Wilson, propose detailed and accurate analyses of this notion, we will maintain that these analyses can be better systematized if seen through Peirce’s notion of abduction. We will try to maintain that the variety of inferential processes in play in a linguistic act is mostly of an abductive nature. Moreover, we will maintain that the typological tripartition of abductions discussed by Eco (1981) allows to account for a signi cant part of the mechanisms involved in the comprehension of an utterance, …
