Distribution of D2 dopamine receptor in the olfactory glomeruli of the rat olfactory bulb

2005

Dopamine plays key roles in the processing of the olfactory information that takes place in the olfactory glomeruli. Previous studies using autoradiography demonstrate that, at the glomerular level, these actions are mainly mediated via activation of D2 dopamine receptors. Moreover, it has been suggested that D2 receptors could be present in the olfactory nerve, where they might modulate the entrance of olfactory input into the brain. Nevertheless, the precise subcellular localization of D2 receptors in the glomerular neuropil has not been investigated. In this report, we show the subcellular distribution of D2 receptors in the glomerular circuits of Wistar rats, using pre-embedding immunog…

Early Referral to an ALS Center Reduces Several Months the Diagnostic Delay: A Multicenter-Based Study.

2020

Objective: To analyze those factors contributing to the diagnostic delay in ALS.Methods: Consecutive ALS patients were categorized as those studied in departmental hospitals and those studied in a referral ALS center. Demographic and clinical variables, together with data of the diagnostic pathway were collected. Multivariable models were used to assess their effect in the time between symptoms onset and the first neurologist visit (time symptoms-neurologist), in the time between the first neurologist visit and the diagnosis (time neurologist-diagnosis) and in the diagnostic delay. Results: 166 ALS patients with a median diagnostic delay of 11.53 months (IQR: 6.68, 15.23) were included. The …

Behaviour and neural responses in crucian carp to skin odours from cross-order species

2012

Many teleost species respond with fright reactions to olfactory cues from injured skin of conspecifics, but they may also display responses to skin extracts of heterospecific fish. In the present study, we exposed crucian carp to skin extracts of conspecifics and three cross-order species of fish (brown trout, pike, and perch). Behavioural experiments showed that conspecific skin extracts induced fright reactions in crucian carp; extracts of brown trout induced such behaviour less frequently, while extracts of perch and pike were poor inducers of fright responses. The olfactory bulb is chemo-topically organized, and different sub-sets of neurons respond to functionally related odorants that…

RGB Photoelasticity: Review and Improvements

2010

:  This paper considers the main developments of RGB photoelasticity with reference to the maximum measurable retardation. In this paper, a new procedure based on the standard error function evaluated on a subset of the calibration array is also proposed and experimentally tested. The experiments show that the filament lamp makes it possible to find retardations until approximately 4 fringe orders while the fluorescent lamp makes it possible to determine higher fringe orders (12 fringe orders in this paper) owing to the discrete spectrum of the source. The paper shows that, by using the incandescent lamp, the primary limiting factor is the lack of modulation of the R, G and B signals wherea…

PERANCANGAN ALAT UKUR INTENSITAS CAHAYA BERBASIS ARDUINO LEONARDO MENGGUNAKAN SENSOR LDR (Light Dependent Resistor)

2020

Lux meter is a device used to measure the intensity of light in an area. The purpose of this thesis is to design a light intensity measuring device using LDR components as a light sensor, comparing light intensity measuring devices made using LDR sensors and Arduino Leonardo based microcontrollers with standard tools. The data used in this study are primary data. The data obtained is then processed using MS. Excel. The type of light bulbs used are Philips CFL (Philips Essential) lamps, each lamp having a power of 5, 8, 11, 14, 18, 23, 27, 32, 35, and 50 watts with a luxmeter vertical distance of 1, 2 and 3 meters from the lamp.
From the results of testing the tools and processing of c…

Teaching Public Administration Abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program

2011

The purpose of this article is to promote the benefits of the Fulbright Specialist Program—which was created in 2001 as a short-term complement to the Fulbright Scholar Program—and to encourage more public administration scholars to consider teaching abroad. After providing an overview of the Fulbright Specialist Program and the collaborative teaching approach we used for the preparation and delivery of instructional materials, it presents a number of lessons learned from the perspective of the Fulbright Specialist and the host institution for maximizing the experience of teaching abroad. This article also is dedicated to the work of Fulbright, which has pursued its mission to increase mutu…

Bulbar impairment score and survival of stable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients after noninvasive ventilation initiation

2018

There is general agreement that noninvasive ventilation (NIV) prolongs survival in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and that the main cause of NIV failure is the severity of bulbar dysfunction. However, there is no evidence that bulbar impairment is a contraindication for NIV. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of bulbar impairment on survival in ALS patients with NIV. ALS patients for whom NIV was indicated were included. Those patients who refused NIV were taken as the control group. 120 patients who underwent NIV and 20 who refused NIV were included. The NIV group presented longer survival (median 18.50 months, 95% CI 12.62–24.38 months) than the no-NIV group (3.00 mont…

Amyloid-Beta Induces Different Expression Pattern of Tissue Transglutaminase and Its Isoforms on Olfactory Ensheathing Cells: Modulatory Effect of In…

2021

Abstract Alzhèimer Disease (AD) is characterized by protein aggregates in the brain, including amyloid-beta (Aβ), a substrate for tissue transglutaminase (TG2). We assessed the effect of full native peptide of Aβ (1–42), the fragments (25–35 and 35–25) on TG2 expression and its isoforms (Long and Short) on mouse Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OECs). The levels of cytoskeletal proteins, Vimentin and Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein, were also studied. The effect of the pre-treatment with Indicaxanthin on cell viability, total Reactive Oxygen Species, superoxide anion and apoptotic pathway activation was assessed. Since Nestin is co-expressed in pluripotent stem cells with cyclin D1, their levels …
