Objective. We investigated the ability of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography with SonoVue (Bracco SpA, Milan, Italy), a sulfur hexafluoride microbubble contrast agent, to reveal differences between benign and malignant focal splenic lesions. Methods. In a prospective study we investigated 35 lesions in 35 patients (24 male and 11 female; mean age ± SD, 54 ± 15 years) with focal splenic lesions detected by B-mode ultrasonography. Flow cytometric DNA analysis of hepatic tumours on ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirates

A study was performed on a nonconsecutive series of 51 patients in order to assess the feasibility, reliability, and usefulness of flow cytometric (FCM) DNA analysis of samples obtained from benign and malignant hepatic tumours by means of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (UG-FNA). Cytological and often histological confirmation of the nature of the lesion was obtained in all cases from an expert pathologist. For FCM DNA analysis in 32 cases, it was also possible to use samples obtained at surgery from the actual tumours. There were no post UG-FNA complications, either early or late. Ultrasound-guided port-a-cath positioning with the new one-shoot technique: thoracic complications.

Port-a-cath catheterization is often required for those patients who need long-term therapies (malnutrition, neoplasm, renal failure, other severe diseases). The use of ports for a wide range of indications is not exempt from complications. Retrospective dosimetry for Latvian workers at Chernobyl.

Between 1986 and 1991 approximately 6500 Latvian inhabitants were recruited for clean-up work at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Their absorbed doses are usually unknown, because less than half of them had their external exposure officially documented. Clinical investigations show a high morbidity rate for these clean-up workers when compared with that of the general population. In order to understand the causes of their diseases and the impact of ionising radiation, electron spin resonance (ESR) has been used to measure the absorbed doses in human tooth enamel. Our aim was to assess the incidence and ultrasound features of thyroid nodules in an adult population screened by means of high-resolution ultrasonography (HRUS) and to evaluate the contribution of real-time spatial compound sonography (CS) in terms of image quality. Modeling the impact of soft tissue on axial transmission measurements of ultrasonic guided waves in human radius

Recent in vitro and simulation studies have shown that guided waves measured at low ultrasound frequencies (f=200 kHz) can characterize both material properties and geometry of the cortical bone wall. In particular, a method for an accurate cortical thickness estimation from ultrasound velocity data has been presented.
