Ultrasound-Guided Infraclavicular Axillary Vein Versus Internal Jugular Vein Cannulation in Critically Ill Mechanically Ventilated Patients: A Random…

2022

OBJECTIVES: This clinical trial aimed to compare the ultrasound-guided in-plane infraclavicular cannulation of the axillary vein (AXV) and the ultrasound-guided out-of-plane cannulation of the internal jugular vein (IJV). DESIGN: A prospective, single-blinded, open label, parallel-group, randomized trial. SETTING: Two university-affiliated ICUs in Poland (Opole and Lublin). PATIENTS: Mechanically ventilated intensive care patients with clinical indications for central venous line placement. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomly assigned into two groups: the IJV group (n = 304) and AXV group (n = 306). The primary outcome was to compare the IJV group and AXV group through the venipuncture an…

Ultrasound accelerated esterification of bile acids

2004

In this study power ultrasound accelerated esterification reactions of some model substances and bile acids were done. In the model reactions the best result was 19-fold increase in the reaction rate when using ultrasound and the temperature was allowed to rise during the irradiation. In the case of bile acid methyl esters a clear increase in the reaction rates was also observed by ultrasonic irradiations.

Stability and extraction of bioactive sulfur compounds from Allium genus processed by traditional and innovative technologies

2017

Abstract Since ancient times, species from the Allium genus have been used in both culinary and medicinal applications. The health promoting properties, with well documented “evidence-based” studies, were attributed to the genus’ high content of bioactive organosulfur compounds. For these reasons, the organosulfur compounds have attracted interest in both food and pharmaceutical industries to be used as additives or supplements. Therefore, improvement in the extraction and stability during processing and storage of these molecules is crucial. The presented review documents the effects of traditional and innovative processing techniques on the extraction and stability of organosulfur compoun…

Effects of ultrasound and high pressure on physicochemical properties and HMF formation in Turkish honey types

2018

Abstract In industrial production, thermal processing of honey at 50 °C commonly induces liquefaction, i.e. it reduces the crystal count and viscosity and delays any subsequent crystallization. Unfortunately, thermal treatment can generate toxic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), thereby resulting in quality reduction. Considering this, the present work aims at evaluating the influence of (two) processing technologies as alternatives to thermal processing of honey, namely high hydrostatic pressure (HHP; P = 220–330 MPa, T = 50/60 °C, t = 23/106 min), and ultrasound processing (US; at 24 kHz). The quality parameters evaluated for honey included liquefaction time, HMF content, diastase number, co…

Simulation of laser-generated ultrasonic wave propagation in solid media and air with application to NDE

2009

Ultrasonic methods are well known as powerful and reliable tool for defect detection. In the previous decades focus and interest have been directed to non-contact sensors and methods, showing many advantages over contact techniques where inspection depends on contact conditions (pressure, coupling medium, contact area). The non-contact hybrid ultrasonic method described here is of interest for many applications, requiring periodic inspection in service or after manufacturing. Despite the potential impact of laser-generated ultrasound in many areas of industry, robust tools for studying the phenomenon are lacking and thus limit the design and optimization of non-destructive testing and evalu…

Mind the gap in the knowledge of the potential food applications of ultrasound based on its mechanism of action

2021

Abstract Ultrasound is recognized as one of the alternative green technologies that are used in food technology over the last decades. It is used for several purposes, such as analysis, preservation, emulsification, crystallization, homogenization, extraction, thawing, filtration, and drying. To achieve these purposes, ultrasound mainly consists of the application of acoustic waves generating mechanical and chemical phenomena that are fundamentally different compared with those applied in conventional methods. The principle of this technology aims to save energy, decreases the processing time, and improves the quality, safety, and shelf life of food products. In this regard, this book chapt…

Alta definición ecográfica en tiempo real (HDLive US) en Obstetricia y Ginecología / High real time ultrasound definition (HDLive US) in Obstetrics a…

2013

Injection pressure mapping of intraneural vs. perineural injections: further lessons from cadaveric studies.

2018

Background The aim of the study was to investigate the difference between intraneural and perineural injection pressures in human cadavers. Targeted nerves included the cervical roots, the supraclavicular and infraclavicular brachial plexus, the sciatic-subgluteal nerve and the common peroneal and tibial nerves. Methods Ten readings were obtained for each nerve location. Over ten seconds, 1 mL of 0.9% NaCl was injected - deliberately slower than in clinical practice to eliminate the risk of aberrant readings relating to the speed of injection. Perineural injections occurred at least 1 mm outside the epineurium. After pressure recordings were completed 0.1mL of dye was injected, and dissecti…

Three-dimensional ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis

1995

Within the past five years, 3D ultrasonography has developed to the degree that it offers both the patient and the examiner an entirely new visual experience in prenatal diagnosis. With the system described here (Kretz-technik, Austria), any desired plane can be displayed within the stored volume, and within seconds a high-quality 3D surface or transparent image can be calculated and displayed on the ultrasound monitor without need for an external workstation. All of this can be performed routinely in the clinical setting. Since 1989 we have routinely examined a total of 458 fetuses (242 normal and 216 with anomalies) between 16 and 38 weeks of gestation, supplementing our conventional 2D u…
