Spectral shapes of forbidden argonβdecays as background component for rare-event searches

2017

The spectral shape of the electrons from the two first-forbidden unique beta- decays of Ar-39 and Ar-42 were calculated for the first time to the next-to-leading order. Especially the spectral shape of the Ar-39 decay can be used to characterise this background component for dark matter searches based on argon. Alternatively, due to the low thresholds of these experiments, the spectral shape can be investigated over a wide energy range with high statistics and thus allow a sensitive comparison with the theoretical predictions. This might lead to interesting results for the ratio of the weak vector and axial-vector constants in nuclei.

Detection of a structural impact in liquid metal flow during test runs of the EURISOL target mock-up

2009

Abstract The many possible applications of Liquid Metal (LM) technology promise improved thermal efficiency, which can provide much-needed impetus to finding solutions for the growing world energy needs, as well as increasing the accuracy and power of certain delicate scientific apparatus used in the materials and biological sciences. The development of appropriate safeguards and instrumentation is critical to continued progress in this area of technology. During the hydraulic test of the EURISOL liquid metal target, a component failure was registered by the instrumentation; its detection in the presence of liquid metal flow was critical to ensuring the safety of both the personnel and the …

Semi-Empirical LET Descriptions of Heavy Ions Used in the European Component Irradiation Facilities

2010

Semi-empirical fitting based on classical Bohr theory has been applied to the experimental LET data in silicon of the RADEF heavy ion cocktail species. The parameterized LET descriptions to be used in the European Component Irradiation Facilities are introduced and compared with the commonly used estimations from SRIM-code. Also, a new user interface, ECIF Cocktail Calculator, based on this work, has been published under the RADEF webpages at http://www.jyu.fi/accelerator/radef/ECIFCalc.

Cluster kernels for semisupervised classification of VHR urban images

2009

In this paper, we present and apply a semisupervised support vector machine based on cluster kernels for the problem of very high resolution image classification. In the proposed setting, a base kernel working with labeled samples only is deformed by a likelihood kernel encoding similarities between unlabeled examples. The resulting kernel is used to train a standard support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Experiments carried out on very high resolution (VHR) multispectral and hyperspectral images using very few labeled examples show the relevancy of the method in the context of urban image classification. Its simplicity and the small number of parameters involved make it versatile and wor…

Drawback of ICA Procedure on EEG: Polarity Indeterminacy at Local Optimization

2008

Independent component analysis (ICA) has been extensively applied to reject artifacts in electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing. The first step is to extract the independent component activations from the electrode records, and then project the desired components back to the electrodes. After the composition of the projected component is analyzed in details under ICA procedure, this study shows that since ICA may extract some source components at the local optimization in high-dimensional EEG signal space, the artificial polarity indeterminacy may happen on the projected component at some electrodes. By numerical simulations, this issue also exhibits that this polarity ambiguity occ…

Improving the prediction of air pollution peak episodes generated by urban transport networks

2016

Abstract This paper illustrates the early results of ongoing research developing novel methods to analyse and simulate the relationship between trasport-related air pollutant concentrations and easily accessible explanatory variables. The final scope is to integrate the new models in traditional traffic management support systems for a sustainable mobility of road vehicles in urban areas. This first stage concerns the relationship between the hourly mean concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and explanatory factors reflecting the NO2 mean level one hour back, along with traffic and weather conditions. Particular attention is given to the prediction of pollution peaks, defined as exceedanc…

Simple and Flexible Power Loss Minimizer With Low-Cost MCU Implementation for High-Efficiency Three-Phase Induction Motor Drives

2021

This paper presents a simple, practical and low-cost implementation of a power losses minimization algorithm for three-phase induction motors taking also into account both iron core losses and magnetic saturation. The algorithm evaluates, in real-time, the optimal direct axis magnetizing flux component for efficiency enhancement of the drive. A further advantage of the proposed technique is represented by a flexible and low-cost implementation by means of an ATMEL ATSAM3X8E microcontroller. The power loss minimization algorithm is tested preliminarily by means of several simulations, then, experimentally validated by applying the proposed control strategy on a 5.5 kW Field Oriented Control …

Comments on the validity of a common category of constitutive equations

1974

Many constitutive equations for viscoelastic materials which have appeared in the literature are modifications of the linear viscoelasticity model. Their general form is: [5] $$\tau = \int\limits_0^\infty {(f_1 C + f_2 C^{ - 1)} ds.} $$ The memory functionsf 1 andf 2, are assumed to depend explicitly on either some instantaneous or some timeaveraged value of the invariants of the rate of strain. It is shown in this paper that the general theory of simple fluids with fading memory is based on certain assumptions of smoothness for the constitutive functional which are violated by constitutive equations of the type discussed. This implies that, should any real material obey eq. [5], with an ex…

Antiprotozoan lead discovery by aligning dry and wet screening: Prediction, synthesis, and biological assay of novel quinoxalinones

2014

Protozoan parasites have been one of the most significant public health problems for centuries and several human infections caused by them have massive global impact. Most of the current drugs used to treat these illnesses have been used for decades and have many limitations such as the emergence of drug resistance, severe side-effects, low-to-medium drug efficacy, administration routes, cost, etc. These drugs have been largely neglected as models for drug development because they are majorly used in countries with limited resources and as a consequence with scarce marketing possibilities. Nowadays, there is a pressing need to identify and develop new drug-based antiprotozoan therapies. In …
