Heterogeneous Database Browsing in WWW Based on Meta Model of Data Sources
2001
This paper describes a development principle and technique for a simple universal multiple database browser. The browser operates by getting information from metamodel of data sources and actual data from legacy data sources. Every element such as entity, field, and relation is mapped to some component of HTML page with appropriate structure and layout. Many templates of information layouts can be created allowing to dynamical changing of HTML page to acceptable user interface. The wrappers are used to provide browser with actual data and to act as mediators between data sources and browser. This approach allows to quickly describing new data sources, creating wrappers, making modifications…
Factors of Development of the Management of the Design Education in Latvia
2015
<p>The author proceeds with the discussion of significant problems in design industry and education in Europe and Latvia. This research is devoted to several important aspects in the development of design education in Latvia. Design education which is mainly based on the meaning of design as an aesthetic component of products, environment or communication, includes only a narrow range of specializations in the traditional fields of design. This concept affects the structure of design education and an beliefs of the areas in which designers will be able to work. Insufficiency of public awareness and understanding of the essence of design results in limited demand of design products and…
The technological transplant
1990
Abstract This paper deals with technology transfer and conditions for successful diffusion of renewable energy technologies in developing countries. Issues such as perception of needs and resources are fully discussed, whether on mega-scale or micro-scale; that is to say, whether for a specific project or a whole country. A distinction is made between technology and the technological device, the latter being a component which is injected into a social system creating new links into the pre-existing structure; therefore, even if perfect in itself, it may not fit into the system in which it has to operate. The need for a complete analysis of the effects of the injection (or transplant) of the…
Influence of Material-Related Aspects of Additive and Subtractive Ti-6Al-4V Manufacturing on Energy Demand and Carbon Dioxide Emissions
2016
Summary The additive manufacturing of metal parts represents a promising process that could be used alongside traditional manufacturing methods. The research scenario in this field is still largely unexplored, as far as the technological solutions adopted to integrate different processes are concerned and in terms of environmental and economic impact assessment. In this article, an electron beam melting (EBM) process and a machining process have been analyzed and compared using a cradle-to-grave life cycle–based approach. The production of components made of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been assumed as a case study. The proposed methodology is able to account for all of the main factors of influ…
A fuel cell-based hybrid power supply for portable electronics devices
2008
A fuel cell - supercapacitor hybrid power supply for portable applications is designed. To ensure system level simulation, each component is accurately modeled and simulation results are reported. A Digital Still Camera is selected as specific load device, although the choice of a specific application does not influence the proposed control technique performances but only dictates the power supply specifications. The fuel cell and the power management system are modeled in PSIM. © 2008 IEEE.
Training label cleaning with ant colony optimization for classification of remote sensing imagery
2015
This paper presents an original approach for improving performances of the supervised classifiers in remote sensing imagery by proposing a technique to refine a given training set using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The new method called ACO-Training Label Cleaning (ACO-TLC) applies ACO model for selection of the significant training samples from a given set of labeled vectors in order to optimize the quality of a supervised classifier. This means to retain the most informative samples and to remove the uncertain or misclassified training samples, which lead to classification errors. As a result of the selection process, we can obtain a purified training set. The proposed model is implemen…
Memetic Engineering for Permanent Education in Line with Sustainable Growth
2012
Given the recent point of view of the European Commission regarding the implementation of a new strategy for sustainable growth and jobs, this paper emphasises the opportunity and urgency of supporting the EU 2020 strategy, providing an appropriate educational tool for the knowledge society. The main objectives are: a. adapting memetic engineering expressed in terms of General System Theory to the teaching component of permanent education based on bounded rationality and "Just in Time"as key tools for fighting cognitive chaoplexity in the post-industrial era; b. facilitating the use of memetic engineering based on its double-faceted nature: as both positive and negative feedback; c. extendi…
A New Approach to the Modeling of Anisotropic Media with the Transmission Line Matrix Method
2021
A reformulation of the Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) method is presented to model non-dispersive anisotropic media. Two TLM-based solutions to solve this problem can already be found in the literature, each one with an interesting feature. One can be considered a more conceptual approach, close to the TLM fundamentals, which identifies each TLM in Maxwell’s equations with a specific line. But this simplicity is achieved at the expense of an increase in the memory storage requirements of a general situation. The second existing solution is a more powerful and general formulation that avoids this increase in memory storage. However, it is based on signal processing techniques and considerabl…
Ventricular Fibrillation and Tachycardia detection from surface ECG using time-frequency representation images as input dataset for machine learning
2017
Parameter-less ventricular fibrillation detection with time-frequency representation.Time-frequency representations are treated as images for a classifier.A comparison for four classifiers demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. The proposed technique could be applied to any signal and research field. This is a novel approach to signal analysis. Background and objectiveTo safely select the proper therapy for Ventricullar Fibrillation (VF) is essential to distinct it correctly from Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) and other rhythms. Provided that the required therapy would not be the same, an erroneous detection might lead to serious injuries to the patient or even cause Ventricular Fibr…
ETAS Space–Time Modeling of Chile Triggered Seismicity Using Covariates: Some Preliminary Results
2021
Chilean seismic activity is one of the strongest in the world. As already shown in previous papers, seismic activity can be usefully described by a space–time branching process, such as the ETAS (Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequences) model, which is a semiparametric model with a large time-scale component for the background seismicity and a small time-scale component for the triggered seismicity. The use of covariates can improve the description of triggered seismicity in the ETAS model, so in this paper, we study the Chilean seismicity separately for the North and South area, using some GPS-related data observed together with ordinary catalog data. Our results show evidence that the use of s…
