Putting the “bio” in “biotherapeutics”/checkpoints for biosimilars/application of biosimilars
2016
Abstract / Executive summary The number of biosimilar medicines on the market is steadily increasing, due, in part, to patent expiration of several top-selling biologic medicines. These three e-learning modules discuss the basic concepts behind biosimilar medicines and highlight key regulatory considerations when using biosimilar medicines in medical practice.
Urology Residency Training in Italy: Results of the First National Survey
2018
Background: Numerous surveys have been performed to determine the competence and the confidence of residents. However, there is no data available on the condition of Italian residents in urology. Objective: To investigate the status of training among Italian residents in urology regarding scientific activity and surgical exposure. Design, setting, and participants: A web-based survey that included 445 residents from all of the 25 Italian Residency Programmes was conducted between September 2015 and November 2015. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: The main outcomes were represented by scientific activity, involvement in surgical procedures, and overall satisfaction. Results and …
Tandem repeats lead to sequence assembly errors and impose multi-level challenges for genome and protein databases
2019
AbstractThe widespread occurrence of repetitive stretches of DNA in genomes of organisms across the tree of life imposes fundamental challenges for sequencing, genome assembly, and automated annotation of genes and proteins. This multi-level problem can lead to errors in genome and protein databases that are often not recognized or acknowledged. As a consequence, end users working with sequences with repetitive regions are faced with ‘ready-to-use’ deposited data whose trustworthiness is difficult to determine, let alone to quantify. Here, we provide a review of the problems associated with tandem repeat sequences that originate from different stages during the sequencing-assembly-annotatio…
Exponential sums related to Maass forms
2019
We estimate short exponential sums weighted by the Fourier coefficients of a Maass form. This requires working out a certain transformation formula for non-linear exponential sums, which is of independent interest. We also discuss how the results depend on the growth of the Fourier coefficients in question. As a byproduct of these considerations, we can slightly extend the range of validity of a short exponential sum estimate for holomorphic cusp forms. The short estimates allow us to reduce smoothing errors. In particular, we prove an analogue of an approximate functional equation previously proven for holomorphic cusp form coefficients. As an application of these, we remove the logarithm …
Presentación del Monográfico: una mirada a la emigración española cualificada reciente: Estado de la cuestión y enfoques teóricos
2018
The study of qualified emigration has returned to the political and scientific agendas in recent decades. Currently the theoretical approaches have changed from a completely renewed economic, political, social and technological context. This article presents a summary of these new approaches and a current overview of skilled migration of Spaniards, based on a review of the specialized literature.
Multilayer Network Model of Movie Script
2018
Network models have been increasingly used in the past years to support summarization and analysis of narratives, such as famous TV series, books and news. Inspired by social network analysis, most of these models focus on the characters at play. The network model well captures all characters interactions, giving a broad picture of the narration’s content. A few works went beyond by introducing additional semantic elements, always captured in a single layer network. In contrast, we introduce in this work a multilayer network model to capture more elements of the narration of a movie from its script: people, locations, and other semantic elements. This model enables new measures and insights…
Nonthermally driven volatilome evolution of food matrices: The case of high pressure processing
2020
Abstract Background The adoption of innovative nonthermal processing as alternatives to conventional heating techniques in the food industry is mainly relied on their tremendous potential to simultaneously achieve preservation purposes and the maintenance of fresh-like characteristics and health benefits of final products. With increasing evaluation for the applicability of nonthermal processing, there remains, however, a great challenge for keeping the balance between the efficiency of microbial/enzymatic inactivation and the maintenance of sensory and nutritional characteristics. Accordingly, a timely summarization and elucidation of the response pattern and mechanism of related quality p…
After the Press Release on Mathematics Achievement : The Alignment of Formative Assessments and Summative Standardized Tests for Students from Minori…
2018
Media coverage often reports standardized test scores as indicative of global competitiveness and journalists frequently frame the mathematics achievement of U.S. students using a discourse of failure, particularly for students from minoritized backgrounds. Informed by research literature on: (a) formative and summative assessment, (b) the interdependence of language and mathematics, and (c) a sociopolitical stance for researching students from minoritized language backgrounds, this study analyzed the linguistic alignment of mathematics assessments. Results from this study show how alignment between formative assessment processes and summative standardized tests influences performance on hi…
Mixed e-assessment: An application of the studentgenerated question technique
2010
This paper presents the experiment of a mixed summative-formative evaluation in an asynchronous distance higher education context. In the experiment, performed in the distance course of Total Quality Management, Industrial Engineering, University of Guadalajara (Mexico), students are guided to formultate questions on specific topics. Studentgenerated questions are evaluated through an ad-hoc quantitative tool, specifically designed for the purpose: the four-criterion Observation Matrix. The experiment shows: (1) that it is possible to improve the Higher Education evaluation process and formalise students' skill in a more thoroughly way than with traditional evaluation; (2) how the student-e…
