Complete Shadowing Modeling and its Effect on System Level Performance Evaluation

2008

Computer simulations are a common procedure for assessing the performance of new algorithms. To conduct a valid and accurate study, the models employed in such simulators need to be carefully selected. Regarding shadowing modeling, one-dimensional models are fairly commonplace in the literature. While simple and with low computational costs, these models can not produce correlated fading values for mobiles that are in nearby positions and, besides, do not include the cross-correlation effect. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a bi-dimensional shadowing model which introduces both the spatial correlation and the cross-correlation present in real systems. Finally, the impact …

Dynamic packet scheduling performance in UTRA Long Term Evolution downlink

2008

In this paper we evaluate the performance of dynamic Packet Scheduling (PS) of 3GPP UTRAN Long Term Evolution (LTE) Downlink. Packet scheduling is of utmost importance in 3G LTE, because all traffic types with different Quality of Service requirements are competing of the resources. We present a decoupled time and frequency domain packet scheduling framework for LTE downlink. Simulation results with three basic packet scheduler combinations with different amount of fairness are presented in four different 3GPP macro simulation cases to show the both extremes in tradeoff between fairness and spectral efficiency. In addition, the effect of multiuser diversity on packet scheduling performance …

VoIP end-to-end performance in HSPA with packet age aided HSDPA scheduling

2008

In this paper, we present an enhanced VoIP scheduling for the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) in UMTS, which takes the age of the VoIP packet into account. The downlink capacity can be significantly improved by this way, especially for shorter uplink transmission delay. In order to quantify the achievable performance improvement, we present results obtained from extensive system-level uplink and downlink simulations. Inter alia, it is shown that using the proposed scheme can lead to an increase in the downlink cell capacity of up to 16%. By applying the proposed method, the downlink performance can be improved considerably while the uplink performance remains the same, which ensur…

On the use of composite indicators for mobile communications network management in smart sustainable cities

2020

Beyond 5G networks will be fundamental towards enabling sustainable mobile communication networks. One of the most challenging scenarios will be met in ultra-dense networks that are deployed in densely populated areas. In this particular case, mobile network operators should benefit from new assessment metrics and data science tools to ensure an effective management of their networks. In fact, incorporating architectures allowing a cognitive network management framework could simplify processes and enhance the network&rsquo
