This article provides an overall look at the history of unemployment in Italy from unification up to the present day, including the changes in the many different economic, social and political aspects of the phenomenon. At the time of Italian unification, people's notions were still rather vague as to who the unemployed actually were. Using the unanticipated creation of a new agency in the French region of Lyon as a quasi-natural experiment, we question whether distance to local public employment agencies (LPEAs) is a new channel for spatial mismatch. Contrary to past evidence based on aggregated data and consistently with the spatial mismatch literature, we find no evidence of a worker/agency spatial mismatch, which pleads for a resizing of the French LPEA network. However, echoing with the literature on the institutional determinants of the local public employment agencies' efficiency, we do find detrimental institutional transitory effects.

Unemployment in Jordan

The focus of this report (prepared in the framework of the ETF Observatory function project) is unemployment. However, considering that unemployment information in itself should not be used or analysed in isolation from other indicators or data, the report begins by providing an overview of the general labour market situation in Jordan. After the main data on employment by sector, age, gender and level of education are presentented, on the basis of the available information, the specific cases of non-Jordanian employees and employment in the informal economy are highlighted as topics requiring special attention in the Jordanian labour market.

Coping with Asymmetric Shocks in the EMU: The Role of Labour Market Flexibility

The chapter discusses the economic conditions for the success of EMU when there is still a need for structural reforms in the markets of goods and services, and factors of production. In view of asymmetric shocks, experience shows that behaviour in nominal and real wage growth resulted in increased unemployment throughout the EU15. Fiscal policy, on the other hand, could mitigate to some extent the burden of wage adjustment, and could play an important role in improving productivity. Fair Wages and Unemployment in a Small Open Economy

2006

In this paper we develop a model of a multi-sector multi-factor small open economy with involuntary unemployment due to fair wages. The model is used inter alia to analyse the labour market effects of changes in unemployment benefits and the domestic labour supply. Our analysis covers both the case where factor prices do not react to endowment changes - as in the Heckscher-Ohlin model - and the case where they do. Results are sensitive to this distinction, thereby emphasizing the benefit of employing a general production structure that encompasses both cases.

Personality and Labour Market Income: Evidence from Longitudinal Data

This study contributes to the literature on how personality is rewarded in the labour market by examining the relationship between personality and labour market income. Our results suggest that adulthood extraversion is positively associated with income when education, work experience, and unemployment history, measured prospectively from longitudinal data, are controlled for. In addition, childhood constructiveness indicating active and well-controlled behaviour has a positive association with income in adulthood.

Determinants of inter-regional migration in the Baltic countries

We show that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania despite small geographical size feature considerable and persistent regional disparities. Registered migration rates have declined dramatically since the last years of Soviet era, yet they are high by international standards. Evidence from regional inflows and outflows in Latvia and from Estonian labour force survey is used to show that regional unemployment and especially wage differentials, as well as demographic factors, have a significant impact both on gross and net migration flows. Childhood adversities have been linked with adverse life events, but less is known about the long-term effects of childhood home atmosphere in terms of work career. We investigated whether childhood adversities and home atmosphere were associated with disability or unemployment pension.
