High-tech imaging and molecular biomarkers of fibrosis in hypertension-induced left ventricular hypertrophy
2017
Birth weight influences blood pressure values and variability in children and adolescents
2001
The objective of the present study was to assess the relationships between birth weight and the values and variability of ambulatory blood pressure. Six hundred thirty healthy children (369 girls) age 4 to 18 years (mean, 9.9 years) born at term after a normotensive pregnancy were included. The subjects were divided into 5 groups according to birth weight. For each subject, a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed according to the protocol designed. Average and variability (estimated as the standard deviation) of ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate were calculated separately for 24-hour, daytime, and nighttime periods. When values were adjusted for gender, current a…
Influence of the i/d polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene on the outcome of microalbuminuria in essential hypertension
2000
The objective of the present study was to analyze the influence of the I/D polymorphism of the ACE gene on the outcome of microalbuminuria in essential hypertensive patients who were receiving antihypertensive treatment. One hundred thirty-six essential hypertensive patients who were <50 years old and had never previously received treatment with antihypertensive drugs were included in the study. During a 3-year period, patients received nonpharmacological treatment consisting of moderate salt restriction and a low-calorie diet they were obese, with or without a regimen of antihypertensive drugs based on ß-blockers or ACE inhibitors. Hydrochlorothiazide was added when necessary to maintain t…
Asimismo, …

Angiotensin II Induces Neutrophil Accumulation In Vivo Through Generation and Release of CXC Chemokines
2004
Background—Angiotensin II (Ang II) is implicated in the development of cardiac ischemic disorders in which prominent neutrophil accumulation occurs. Ang II can be generated intravascularly by the renin-angiotensin system or extravascularly by mast cell chymase. In this study, we characterized the ability of Ang II to induce neutrophil accumulation. Methods and Results—Intraperitoneal administration of Ang II (1 nmol/L) induced significant neutrophil recruitment within 4 hours (13.3±2.3×106neutrophils per rat versus 0.7±0.5×106in control animals), which disappeared by 24 hours. Maximal levels of CXC chemokines were detected 1 hour after Ang II injection (577±224 pmol/L cytokine-inducible neut…
Birth weight impacts on wave reflections in children and adolescents.
2003
The objective of the present study was to assess central aortic pressure and wave reflection in children and adolescents at different birth weights. Two hundred nineteen healthy children (126 girls), from 7 to 18 years of age (mean, 11.3 years) and born at term after a normotensive pregnancy, were included. The subjects were divided according to birth weight: <2.5 kg, from 2.5 to 2.999 kg, from 3.0 to 3.5 kg, and >3.5 kg. Pressure waveforms were recorded from the radial artery of the wrist, and the waveform data were then processed by the SphygmoCor radial/aortic transform software module to produce the estimated aortic pressure waveform. Augmentation index, an estimate of the pulse …
Regulation of Oxygen Distribution in Tissues by Endothelial Nitric Oxide
2009
Nitric oxide (NO) decreases cellular oxygen (O 2 ) consumption by competitively inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase. Here, we show that endogenously released endothelial NO, either basal or stimulated, can modulate O 2 consumption both throughout the thickness of conductance vessels and in the microcirculation. Furthermore, we have shown that such modulation regulates O 2 distribution to the surrounding tissues. We have demonstrated these effects by measuring O 2 consumption in blood vessels in a hypoxic chamber and O 2 distribution in the microcirculation using the fluorescent oxygen-probe Ru(phen) 3 2+ . Removal of NO by physical or pharmacological means, or in eNOS −/− mice, abolishes this …
