Comparison of total antioxidant capacity of saliva in women with gestational diabetes mellitus and non-diabetic pregnant women

2017

Background Pregnancy is considered a stressful event, results in higher levels of oxidative stress and considerable changes in physiological and metabolic functions such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Due to the cumulative effect of antioxidants and considering the controversies in this area, this study was undertaken to investigate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of saliva in pregnant women whit gestational diabetes in comparison to non-diabetic pregnant women. Material and methods In this cross-sectional study (2015-16), a total of 31 women with a diagnosis of GDM and 59 non-diabetic pregnant women were included in the diabetic and control groups, respectively. Salivary samp…

Expression of endocan and vascular endothelial growth factor in recurrent minor aphthous ulcers

2019

Background Recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) are common painful inflammatory lesions of the mucous lining of the mouth. Endocan, previously identified as endothelial cell specific molecule-1, is implicated as a vital player in the regulation of several inflammatory processes. A number of inflammatory cytokines and pro-angiogenic growth factors including VEGF upregulate endothelial cells synthesis and expression of endocan. Material and methods Clinical scores of pain and ulcer size as well as level of endocan and VEGF were determined in swaps from aphthous ulcer and contra lateral normal mucosa in 30 patients (nine males and twenty one females) with age ranging from 18 to 45 years and mean ag…

Papilla and pontic area regeneration in patient with gingival smile: A clinical case

2018

Purpose Connective tissue grafts are widely documented as a predictable technique for treating Miller Class I and II recessions, as well as procedures in which soft tissue augmentation is required for aesthetic reasons. This article aims to explore the resolution of a clinical case with this type of problema. Clinical case This case describes a technique for reconstructing a pontic area and adjacent papilla by means of two consecutive connective tissue grafts. The first graft served to increase the amount of tissue in the horizontal direction, and the second promoted vertical reconstruction of the defect. Results and conclusion In cases with aesthetic requirements, restorative intervention …

Effectiveness of an erbium-doped: yttrium, aluminum and garnet laser for treatment of peri-implant disease: Clinical, microbiological, and biochemica…

2018

Background The effectiveness of an erbium-doped: yttrium, aluminum and garnet (Er: YAG) laser (EYL) for the treatment of peri-implant disease (PID) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare non-surgical EYL therapy for PID with locally delivered minocycline hydrochloride (MC) ointment therapy by evaluating clinical, microbiological, and biochemical markers. Material and methods Thirty-seven patients with PID were randomly assigned to either the EYL group (n = 18) or the MC group (n = 19). The clinical, microbiological, and biochemical markers at baseline and at 1 and 3 months after treatment were compared between the two groups. Subgingival plaque and peri-implant crevicular flu…

Association of liver enzyme levels and alveolar bone loss : a cross-sectional clinical study in Sado Island

2018

Background The interaction of periodontopathic bacteria with host immune system induces the production of inflammatory mediators which leads to alveolar bone loss (ABL), the essential feature of periodontitis. Concurrently, periodontal diseases cause the elevation of blood cytokine levels, the alteration of gut microbiota and the dissemination of enterobacteria to the liver. Owing to these mechanisms, periodontal disease might be a risk for liver dysfunction. Several epidemiological studies have reported associations between periodontal diseases and liver dysfunction, although the association between ABL and liver dysfunction has not been investigated. This cross-sectional study determined …

Bilateral Bifid mandibular canals ? Special relevance for a general dental practitioner. Report of 2 cases

2019

Dental practitioners may encounter bifid mandibular canals upon radiographic assessment, and may not understand the true extent of this presentation. The presentation of a bifid mandibular canal poses difficulties when carrying out dental procedures, including administration of mandibular block anaesthesia, oral surgical procedures of the lower third molars, orthognathic surgery and implant placement. Therefore it is of paramount importance that general dental practitioners be aware of the radiographic appearance, as incorrect diagnosis of this rare presentation can lead to detrimental consequences. The purpose of the communication is to draw dental practitioner’s attention to the variation…

Full arch fixed prostheses vs. full arch telescopic-retained retrievable prostheses both supported by implants and natural tooth abutments in periodo…

2019

Background The clinical outcome of full arch fixed prostheses vs. full arch telescopic-retained retrievable prostheses supported by implants and natural tooth abutments in periodontally treated patients has been reported by few studies, with controversial results. The objective of this study was to evaluate long-term (15 years) complications of abutment teeth and dental implants in periodontally treated patients, rehabilitated with full arch telescopic-retained retrievable prostheses (TRP)s vs. full arch fixed prostheses (FP)s supported by teeth and implants. Material and methods After active periodontal therapy (non-surgical and surgical), and implant placement (replacement of hopeless tee…

Local complications associated with labial salivary gland biopsy for diagnosis of Sjögren?s Syndrome : a retrospective cohort study

2019

Background To describe local or systemic complications related to the labial salivary glands biopsy (LSGB) used as diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome (SS). Material and methods Clinical databases from a cohort of patients, who underwent LSGB with provisional clinical diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome, were retrospectively reviewed. Pain, assessed by registering the intake of analgesic drugs in the first week following the biopsy, and any further relevant clinical information regarding complications after biopsy were recorded. Results 50 patients received LSGB. 10 of them (9 women and 1 man) showed histopathological findings compatible with SS. Ten patient (20%) receiving …

Multidisciplinary oral rehabilitation in partially edentulous adult patients with malocclusion: a cross-sectional survey study

2018

Background A cross-sectional survey was conducted to gather information regarding the opinion of Brazilian specialists in both orthodontics and implantology on multidisciplinary oral rehabilitation in partially edentulous patients with malocclusion. Material and methods A total of 305 specialists participated in a telephone survey and answered an ad hoc 10-item questionnaire, including the request of total skull cone-beam tomographies (CBCT) and the use of 3D digital planning software, the best moment of treatment to place dental implants, and the integration of orthodontics in implantology. Results Most participants did not request CBCT (90.8%) or 3D digital planning software images (92.3%…

The effective and safe method for preventing and treating bacteria-induced dental diseases by herbal plants and a recombinant peptide

2020

Background This study was conducted aimed at evaluating the antibacterial property of the recombinant peptide of bacteriocin entrocin P (EnP), the essential oil of Cuminum cyminum, and the extract of Ferulago angulata on some oral pathogens. Besides, the cytotoxicity of EnP was evaluated. Material and methods The antimicrobial property was tested on streptococcus mutans (ATCC 35668), streptococcus salivarius (ATCC 9222), streptococcus oralis (ATCC 35037), and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), using the microbroth dilution method. The 0.2% Chlorhexidin (CHX) mouthwash was used as the control group. Besides, the cytotoxicity analysis was done on gingival fibroblasts by the MTT colorimetric …
