Selective Extraction and Efficient Binding in a Protic Solvent of Contact Ion Triplets by Using a Thiourea-Based Bis-Calix[6]arene Receptor

2013

We report a D3h-symmetric tail-to-tail bis-calix[6]thiourea 5 that displays two divergent cavities triply connected by thiourea linkages. This calix[6]tube was efficiently synthesized through a [1+1] macrocyclization reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The binding properties of this heterotritopic receptor were evaluated in a protic environment (i.e., CD3OD/CDCl3) through NMR studies. Thus, bis-calix[6]thiourea 5 exhibits a remarkable ability in the cooperative complexation of an anion sandwiched between two ammonium ions, a high selectivity for ammonium sulfate salts being observed. The anion is bound through multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions at the thiourea bind…

Decoding vibrational states of Concanavalin A amyloid fibrils.

2015

International audience; Amyloid and amyloid-like fibrils are a general class of protein aggregates and represent a central topic in life sciences for their involvement in several neurodegenerative disorders and their unique mechanical and supramolecular morphological properties. Both their biological role and their physical properties, including their high mechanical stability and thermodynamic inertia, are related to the structural arrangement of proteins in the aggregates at molecular level. Significant variations may exist in the supramolecular organization of the commonly termed cross-β structure that constitutes the amyloid core. In this context, a fine knowledge of the structural deta…

“AND” luminescent “reactive” molecular logic gates: a gateway to multi-analyte bioimaging and biosensing

2014

This review outlines examples that illustrate a recent and highly innovative concept in the field of (bio)molecular sensing, namely the simultaneous multi-analyte detection using "reactive" luminescent probes that are able to produce an optical signal only in response to multiple (bio)chemical inputs and through covalent chemical reactions with target (bio)analytes. Unlike conventional "AND" molecular logic gates based on supramolecular photochemical mechanisms, these unusual "smart" optical (bio)probes are suitable tools to track the rise and fall of a wider range of biologically relevant analytes, in complex media and with higher selectivity. The potential utility of this concept for in v…

Supramolecular Chemical Sensors Based on Pyrene Monomer-Excimer Dual Luminescence

2010

The past ten years have seen a spectacular development of chemical sensors based on the monomer-excimer dual luminescence of aromatic systems, such as pyrene. Either in the form of integrated or multicomponent molecular devices these chemosensors have been attracting a high interest above all because of their unique ratiometric properties. This review will focus on the latter systems, which can be classified into two classes: Firstly, the assembly of receptor-effector conjugates is triggerred by the analyte of interest. As a result, the sensor shows monomer to excimer fluorescence switching upon substrate binding. Secondly, the supramolecular assembly that constitutes the sensor is perturbe…

Surface Pretreatment Boosts the Performance of Supramolecular Affinity Materials on Quartz Crystal Microbalances for Sensor Applications

2013

A Teflon-like coating is the key for the boost in sensitivity of quartz microbalances for the tracing of airborne analytes. Since the undesired signals for the interfering compounds are suppressed and the ones for the targeted compounds (e.g., peroxide explosives) are enhanced, the PCA output is improved.

Re-giardinieri e Natura selvaggia. Implicazioni politico-simboliche dello sradicamento, taglio e trasporto in città degli alberi nella Mesopotamia de…

2022

In Sumerian mythological literature, as in coeval Akkadian one, between the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 2nd millennium, the ruler, foremost among them Gilgameš, on several occasions uproots and/or cuts down trees. These trees should be understood as elements of a wider ‘Wilderness’, with which they share a powerful and ambiguous ontological otherness compared to the city and, more generally, to the land of Sumer. The action of the king on the tree, like that of a farmer or gardener, with the consequent realization of ‘artefacts’, allows, through a cultural organization of the power of the tree, the renewal of the relationship, always subject to crisis, between the human communit…

Central role of IL-6 and MMP-1 for cross talk between human intestinal mast cells and human intestinal fibroblasts.

2012

Mast cells (MC) are key effector cells in allergic reactions but also involved in host defence, tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and fibrogenesis. Here, we show that human intestinal fibroblasts (FB) suppress apoptosis in human intestinal MC dependent on IL-6. Intestinal FB produced IL-6 upon direct stimulation by intestinal MC in co-culture or by MC mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, tryptase or histamine. MC incubated with IL-6 survived for up to 3 weeks similar to MC co-cultured with FB and MC survival could be blocked by neutralizing anti-IL-6 Abs. Moreover, FB stimulated by MC mediators upregulated their expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), a key fibrolytic enzyme. Noteworthy…

Thouless-Valatin Rotational Moment of Inertia from the Linear Response Theory

2017

Spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries of a nuclear many-body system results in appearance of zero-energy restoration modes. Such modes introduce a non-physical contributions to the physical excitations called spurious Nambu-Goldstone modes. Since they represent a special case of collective motion, they are sources of important information about the Thouless-Valatin inertia. The main purpose of this work is to study the Thouless-Valatin rotational moment of inertia as extracted from the Nambu-Goldstone restoration mode that results from the zero-frequency response to the total angular momentum operator. We examine the role and effects of the pairing correlations on the rotational cha…

Water Structure Recovery in Chaotropic Anion Recognition: High-Affinity Binding of Dodecaborate Clusters to γ-Cyclodextrin

2015

Dodecaborate anions of the type B12X12(2-) and B12X11Y(2-) (X=H, Cl, Br, I and Y=OH, SH, NH3(+), NR3(+)) form strong (K(a) up to 10(6) L mol(-1), for B12Br12(2-)) inclusion complexes with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD). The micromolar affinities reached are the highest known for this native CD. The complexation exhibits highly negative enthalpies (up to -25 kcal mol(-1)) and entropies (TΔS up to -18.4 kcal mol(-1), both for B12I12(2-)), which position these guests at the bottom end of the well-known enthalpy-entropy correlation for CDs. The high driving force can be traced back to a chaotropic effect, according to which chaotropic anions have an intrinsic affinity to hydrophobic cavities in aqueous …
