The Impact of Social Media on Consumer Buying Intention

2017

Companies throughout the world are constantly seeking new ways to reach consumers. Just a few decades ago, television and print advertising were the fundamental components of marketing strategies. In the current era, these traditional marketing streams are just a small segment of the varied approaches used to market and brand products. The increasing focus on social media shaped state of the art advertising and shifted the way companies interact with their target groups. As a result, the effective use of social media has become an essential part of creating and maintaining a competitive advantage. Subsequently, companies now place considerable value on the way in which social media can be u…

Highly transitive actions of groups acting on trees

2015

We show that a group acting on a non-trivial tree with finite edge stabilizers and icc vertex stabilizers admits a faithful and highly transitive action on an infinite countable set. This result is actually true for infinite vertex stabilizers and some more general, finite of infinite, edge stabilizers that we call highly core-free. We study the notion of highly core-free subgroups and give some examples. In the case of amalgamated free products over highly core-free subgroups and HNN extensions with highly core-free base groups we obtain a genericity result for faithful and highly transitive actions. In particular, we recover the result of D. Kitroser stating that the fundamental group of …

“Mamá, me quiero ir de este colegio”. Un análisis de las experiencias de acoso escolar de estudiantes con diversidad funcional

2023

Bullying is a high-prevalence problem in the classrooms of our schools. Young people with functional diversity constitute a particularly vulnerable population when they are involved in such situations. This study analyses the harassment experiences of five young people with functional diversity. To this end, five semi-structured interviews and a focus group were conducted. Participants reported having experienced verbal, physical, social and sexual harassment. The treatment of these situations by educational institutions was ineffective and the solution adopted in all cases was a change in the type of schooling. These results highlight the need to carry out teacher training and sensitizatio…

Who can go back to work when the COVID-19 pandemic remits?

2020

AbstractThis paper seeks to determine which workers affected by lockdown measures can return to work when a government decides to apply lockdown exit strategies. This system, which we call Sequential Selective Multidimensional Decision (SSMD), involves deciding sequentially, by geographical areas, sectors of activity, age groups and immunity, which workers can return to work at a given time according to the epidemiological criteria of the country as well as that of a group of reference countries, used as a benchmark, that have suffered a lower level of lockdown de-escalation strategies. We apply SSMD to Spain, based on affiliation to the Social Security system prior to the COVID-19 pandemic…

2018

Recently, two forms of virtue-related humor, benevolent and corrective, have been introduced. Benevolent humor treats human weaknesses and wrongdoings benevolently, while corrective humor aims at correcting and bettering them. Twelve marker items for benevolent and corrective humor (the BenCor) were developed, and it was demonstrated that they fill the gap between humor as temperament and virtue. The present study investigates responses to the BenCor from 25 samples in 22 countries (overall N = 7,226). The psychometric properties of the BenCor were found to be sufficient in most of the samples, including internal consistency, unidimensionality, and factorial validity. Importantly, benevolen…

Effects of different lower-limb sensory stimulation strategies on postural regulation-a Systematic review and metaanalysis

2017

Systematic reviews of balance control have tended to only focus on the effects of single lower-limb stimulation strategies, and a current limitation is the lack of comparison between different relevant stimulation strategies. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine evidence of effects of different lower-limb sensory stimulation strategies on postural regulation and stability. Moderate- to high-pooled effect sizes (Unbiased (Hedges' g) standardized mean differences (SMD) = 0.31-0.66) were observed with the addition of noise in a Stochastic Resonance Stimulation Strategy (SRSS), in three populations (i.e., healthy young adults, older adults, and individuals with low…

EDGE: explorer of diffuse emission and gamma-ray burst explosions

2009

How structures on various scales formed and evolved from the early Universe up to present time is a fundamental question of astrophysical cosmology. EDGE will trace the cosmic history of the baryons from the early generations of massive star by Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) explosions, through the period of cluster formation, down to very low redshifts, when between a third and one half of the baryons are expected to reside in cosmic filaments undergoing gravitational collapse by dark matter (Warm Hot Intragalactic Medium: WHIM). In addition EDGE, with its unprecedented observational capabilities, will provide key results on several other topics. The science is feasible with a medium class mission …

Effect of specialized applications on the visual functions of amblyopic eye in Latvian children

2021

The classical treatment option of amblyopia is occlusions of non-amblyopic eye. The newest methods involve specialized computer and phone games, applications that involve both eyes in visual processing during treatment as well as stimulate binocularity. The aim of the work was to assess the efficiency of specialized phone application ‘Duovision’ in the treatment of amblyopia in preschool-age children. There were 30 participants (5-8 years old): 16 participants had occlusion therapy; 14 participants played the specialized phone application Duovision®. The visual acuity of amblyopic eye, as well as stereopsis was evaluated at near and far distances before the treatment, 2 and 4 months after t…

Have Fun with Math and Music!

2019

If abstraction makes mathematics strong, it often makes it also hard to learn, if not discouraging. If math pedagogy suffers from the lack of engaging strategies, the pedagogy of mathematical music theory must deal with the additional difficulty of double fields and double vocabulary. However, games and interdisciplinary references in a STEAM framework can help the learner break down complex concepts into essential ideas, and gain interest and motivation to approach advanced topics. Here we present some general considerations, followed by two examples which may be applied in a high-school or early college level course. The first is a musical application of a Rubik’s cube, the CubeHarmonic, …

Change and stability: Within-person life satisfaction over a 20-year period using data from the HUNT survey

2020

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate within-person life satisfaction (LS) dynamics for two age groups, 20–29 and 30–39 years, from 1984 to 1986 and to follow them over a 20-year period. Methods: Data from 1984 to 2008 were extracted from the large, prospective, longitudinal North-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT), Norway. This paper includes data from more than 14,500 persons. Data were analysed using logistic regression, and LS dynamics were modelled using gender, time and self-rated health. Results: The analyses revealed that about 20% of people in these age groups had a stable level in LS, also known as set point. Long-term LS change, defined as ⩾2 SDs, was reported f…
