2014

Management groups are an essential part of the management system in Finnish hospitals. Nevertheless, only a few empirical studies have, to date, focused on public sector management teams. This study aims to understand social interaction in management team meetings by describing 1) how management team members participate during meetings and 2) what types of participant roles are constructed during meetings. Three consecutive meetings of an operational area-level management team were videoed. The social interaction was analyzed using the Bales’ Interaction Process Analysis. The results show that interaction during these meetings is task-related and chairperson-centered. The members participat…

Organisational Challenges for School Development and Improvement : The Obstructing Role of Sub-Groups and an Overly Positive School Culture

2020

The purpose of this study has been to identify and analyse obstacles embedded in the school organisation that impede organisational development and improvement. The general findings show that the school structure comprised sub-groups and had characteristics of a diversified organisation. This led to dysfunctional discussions that challenged school development and improvement. Second, the findings revealed that the nature of the school culture may challenge school development processes. Positive features of the school culture, such as engagement, good relationships and high self-esteem might deter the effectiveness of the schools, e.g. the schools’ ability to prioritise and improve the pupil…

Effect of Heat on the Adsorption Properties of Silica Gel

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Engineering and Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.ijetch.org/papers/416-T886.pdf Open access. Adsorption properties of silica gel have been attributed to the surface hydroxyl groups of silica gel. Some hydroxyl groups are free standing and called free silanol groups. Some are hydrogen bonded to neighbouring silanol groups. Christy has shown that a high silanol number and a balanced concentration proportionality between these two different types of hydroxyl groups is necessary for effective adsorption of water molecules. Thermal treatment of silica gel samples alters the proportions of these g…

Simple flume with a central baffle

2016

Abstract In this paper the stage-discharge relationship of a flume with a central baffle is theoretically deduced using the Buckingham-Theorem of the dimensional analysis and the self-similarity theory. The new stage-discharge equation is calibrated by the measurements carried out by Peruginelli and Bonacci using a baffle having a given throat length and five different values of the contraction ratio. Finally, for a given throat length, a relationship linking the discharge with the upstream water depth, the contraction ratio and the contracted width is deduced.

Evaluation of labor skills in Latvia

2019

Skills are a decisive factor for the country's economic development and social-well-being. The OECD emphasizes that strips can help countries integrate into global markets and specialize in technological advanced industries, and countries need to invest in fields not only to help people enter the labour market and protect from the risk of job losses and low quality of work, but also to increase international competitiveness and economic progress in an interlinked world. The aim of the research is to evaluate the most demanded labour skills in Latvia within the framework of certain groups of professions, as well as trends in the demand changes according to the skills of employees in order to…

Variation of student engagement between different algebra tasks

2018

In this study, we analyse how 7th grade students’ engagement during small group work differed in two consecutive algebra lessons: in the first lesson students solved equa-tions and in the second lesson they created equations for other small groups to solve. Data was collected by videorecording the work of two groups in both lessons. Through directed content analysis, categories indicating student engagement were formed based on previous research and refined during analysis. The analysis revealed a change from individual engagement to collaborative engagement between lessons and an increase in many passive students’ engagement. Task characteristics which may affect the type and amount of eng…

Key challenges of new and small virtual team

2007

The purpose of this thesis is to study the factors must be noticed when building a new and small virtual team. These virtual teams are groups of people who work together without the boundaries of time or space using technology (Lipnack & Stamps 2000, 18). The main goal is to study in detail some of the common challenges faced when working with the small virtual teams, especially in the early stages of team development. With this study and the results of it, the reader is aware of the challenges of virtual teams and the differences and similarities between traditional and virtual teams. In addition the reader knows also some factors that must be noticed when a new small virtual team is suppo…

Facilitating leadership team communication

2015

The purpose of this study is to understand and describe how to facilitate competent communication in leadership teamwork. Grounded in the premises of social constructionism and informed by such theoretical frameworks as coordinated management of meaning theory (CMM), dialogic organization development (OD), systemic-constructionist leadership, communication competence, and reflexivity, this study seeks to produce further insights into understanding leadership team communication, communication competence, and team facilitation as applied communication research. This study consists of five articles. The first focuses on the theoretical framing of the relationality of communication competence i…
