Understanding the EU Urban Agenda from the margins of Europe: the case of Porto

2021

This research focuses on the EU regional policy and presents a critical analysis of its influence on the urban regeneration process of the Portuguese city of Porto. A particular attention is drawn to the historic centre area which in 1996 was formally recognised by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The old town's social, cultural and historic heritage has been dealing with a diverse range of challenges and consequently has been the stage of different urban interventions. Among the actions that have been implemented during the last 50 years to steer the area's development, two area-based interventions linked to the EU Cohesion Policy have notably contributed to the processes of urban chan…

Quartiere in transizione.

Green cities, eco-quartieri e dimensione intermedia. Per una nuova stagione di rigenerazione urbana

2014

Urban Landscapes and Resilience. Exploring an adaptive design perspective

2017

Connectivity of urban rivers and environmental justice

2018

With the explosion of urban waterfront revitalization projects in the developed world, it is timely to reflect on the relations between cities and their rivers: how the rivers influenced development of the cities, how cities have treated their riverfronts since 19th century, and how the spatial relations of city and river constrain and enable improved connectivity between urban populations and their rivers. Both celebrated as revitalizing neglected urban centers and criticized for displacing the disenfranchised populations, riverfront revitalization projects raise questions about what constitutes ‘restoration’ in cities, to what degree natural processes and ecological values can be restored…

Pathways for the amplification of agroecology in African sustainable urban agriculture

2020

A growing awareness that highly intensified agricultural systems have made a substantial worldwide contribution to the worsening of the resilience capacity of natural ecosystems has, over the last twenty years, brought general attention to agroecological management models. This aspect is even more evident in industrial agriculture, which is based on the use of multiple chemical products derived from non-natural synthesis. In more developed countries, a new idea of ecology linked to agricultural production has been increasingly developed and, for this reason, there has been a greater diffusion of differentiated agricultural models taking into consideration the environmental impact of product…

Land Consumption: A Multidisciplinary Approach to a Cross-Cutting Theme

2016

The idea of the book emerged from one-day conference with the title: The Consumption of Land and Urban Renewal from Agrigento and its Hinterland], held in May 2012 in Agrigento, Sicily, organised by the author. The conference, which saw the participation of interested citizens, has provided the opportunity to inform and raise awareness among the general public about the international issue of land consumption, starting from an analysis of the local situation, marked by its best-known variation: urban sprawl.
