RELATIONSHIPS OF SERUM URIC ACID WITH PLASMA RENIN ACTIVITY AND PLASMA ALDOSTERONE IN UNTREATED HYPERTENSIVE SUBJECTS
2013
In experimental studies conducted in rats, raising serum uric acid (SUA) levels resulted in stimulation of intrarenal renin expression. Studies in humans exploring the association of SUA with plasma renin activity (PRA) yielded conflicting results. Moreover, little is known about the relationship between plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and SUA. The aim of our study was to analyse the relationships between SUA, PRA and PAC and the influence of age and gender on these relationships in a group of subjects with primary hypertension. We enrolled 281 patients (men 59%), with untreated primary hypertension and normal renal function. The study population wad divided in two subgroups on the b…
Allosteric Models for Multimeric Proteins: Oxygen-Linked Effector Binding in Hemocyanin
2005
In many crustaceans, changing concentrations of several low molecular weight compounds modulates hemocyanin oxygen binding, resulting in lower or higher oxygen affinities of the pigment. The nonphysiological effector caffeine and the physiological modulator urate, the latter accumulating in the hemolymph of the lobster Homarus vulgaris during hypoxia, increase hemocyanin oxygen affinity and decrease cooperativity of oxygen binding. To derive a model that describes the mechanism of allosteric interaction between hemocyanin and oxygen in the presence of urate or caffeine, studies of oxygen, urate, and caffeine binding to hemocyanin were performed. Exposure of lobster hemocyanin to various pH …
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM URIC ACID AND AORTIC STIFFNESS IN UNTREATED HYPERTENSIVE SUBJECTS
2013
Recent studies have reported an association between serum uric acid (SUA) and reduced arterial elasticity. However, in these studies arterial elastic properties have been assessed chiefly by measuring brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (PWV) or peripheral PWV and only sometimes by using aortic PWV. Moreover, the relationships between SUA and arterial stiffness have never been statistically adjusted for albuminuria. Furthermore, the studies exploring the influence of uric acid on aortic distensibility in subjects with arterial hypertension yielded conflicting results. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationships between SUA and aortic stiffness in a group of essential hypertensive …
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AORTIC PULSE WAVE VELOCITY AND RENAL RESISTIVE INDEX IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS.
2013
INTRODUCTION: The assessment of renal hemodynamic parameters by duplex Doppler sonography has been used for many years as a diagnostic tool in the daily workup of kidney diseases. Recent data suggest that these parameters, especially the intrarenal resistive index (RI), may be also associated with systemic vascular changes and cardiovascular risk. However, conflicting data exist about the independent association of aortic stiffness with RI. AIM: The aim was to evaluate the relationship between RI and arterial stiffness, assessed by aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), in the hypertensive subjects consecutively attending our hypertension centre. METHODS: We enrolled 264 subjects, aged between 3…

Non-Classical Transformation of Benzendiazonium Hydrogen Sulfates. Access to 1,3-Dimethylisochromeno[4,3-c]pyrazol-5(1H)-one, a Potential Benzodiazep…
2013
The compound 2-((1,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)(methyl)carbamoyl)benzene-diazonium hydrogen sulfate (10) was reacted with copper sulfate and sodium chloride, in the presence of ascorbic acid as reducing agent, to afford a mixture of the chlorinated epimers 4′-chloro-2,2′,5′-trimethyl-2′,4′-dihydrospiro[isoindoline-1,3′-pyrazol]-3-one (18) and (19), the epimers 4′-hydroxy-2,2′,5′-trimethyl-2′,4′-dihydrospiro[isoindoline-1,3′-pyrazol]-3-one (20) and (21), and N-(1,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)benzamide (22). Under the foregoing conditions, diazonium salt 10 affords neither the 2-chloro-N-(1,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-N-methylbenzamide (23) nor the tricyclic derivative 24, the classical products…
Uric Acid Metabolism in Pre-hypertension and the Metabolic Syndrome
2014
In humans uric acid (UA) is the end product of degradation of purines. The handling of UA by the renal system is a complex process which is not fully understood. To date, several urate transporters in the renal proximal tubule have been identified. Among them, urate transporter 1 (URAT1) and a glucose transporter 9 (GLUT9) are considered of greater importance, as potential targets for treatment of hyperuricemia and the potential associated cardio-metabolic risk. Therefore, the recognition of the metabolic pathway of UA and elucidation of occurrence of hyperuricemia may provide important insights about the relationship between UA, pre-hypertension (preHT) and the metabolic syndrome (MetS). W…
