Do happy faces really modulate liking for Jackson Pollock art and statistical fractal noise images?

Flexas et al. (2013) demonstrated that happy faces increase preference for abstract art if seen in short succession. We could not replicate their findings. In our first experiment, we tested whether valence, saliency or arousal of facial primes can modulate liking of Jackson Pollock art crops. In the second experiment, the emphasis was on testing another type of abstract visual stimuli which possess similar low-level image features: statistical fractal noise images. Pollock crops were rated significantly higher when primed with happy faces in contrast to neutral faces, but not differently to the no-prime condition. Abstract Self-regulation therapy (Amigoo, 1992) is a set of procedures derived from cognitive skill training programs for increasing hypnotizability. First, experiences are generated by actual stimuli. Clients are then asked to associate those experiences with various cues. They are then requested to generate the experiences in response to the cues, but without the actual stimuli. When they are able to do so quickly and easily, therapeutic suggestions are given. Studies of self-regulation therapy indicate that it can be used successfully to treat smoking.

The capacity of multi-layer perceptron artificial neural networks (MLP-ANN) and radial-basis function networks (RBFNs) to predict deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation in barley seeds contaminated with Fusarium culmorum under different conditions has been assessed. Temperature (20-28 °C), water activity (0.94-0.98), inoculum size (7-15 mm diameter), and time were the inputs while DON concentration was the output. The dataset was used to train, validate and test many ANNs. Minimizing the mean-square error (MSE) was used to choose the optimal network.
