Exploring the nexus between financial sector reforms and the emergence of digital banking culture – Evidences from a developing country
2017
Several financial and banking sector reform programs were instituted in different countries over the last three decades. The underlining purpose of these reforms was largely to improve banking sector supervision and regulation, introduce bank privatization mechanism, introduce clearance and settlement systems, infuse competition and to stimulate financial innovation. The objectives of this study are to 1) review the relevant published literature and market survey reports on the financial & banking sector reforms undertaken in Pakistan and elsewhere, 2) analyze how these reform programs develop digital banking culture and increase financial inclusion in the country and 3) guide future resear…
Usability analysis of a novel biometric authentication approach for android-based mobile devices
2014
Mobile devices are widely replacing the standard personal computers thanks to their small size and user-friendly use. As a consequence, the amount of information, often confidential, exchanged through these devices is raising. This makes them potential targets of malicious network hackers. The use of simple passwords or PIN are not sufficient to provide a suitable security level for those applications requiring high protection levels on data and services. In this paper a biometric authentication system, as a running Android application, has been developed and implemented on a real mobile device. A system test on real users has been also carried out in order to evaluate the human-machine int…
Valuing Variability: Dynamic Usage-based Principles in the L2 Development of Four Finnish Language Learners
2020
The general aim of this study is to trace the second language (L2) development of four beginner learners of Finnish over one academic year from a dynamic usage-based perspective. Contrary to many previous studies, this study starts out from meanings, not forms. In other words, an onomasiological approach is adopted. The aim is to investigate what kind of constructions the learners use to express 1) evaluation and 2) existentiality. In line with a dynamic usage-based approach, the goal is to investigate three aspects of development: 1) the interaction between different linguistic means used to express a certain meaning and between the instruction and learning trajectories, 2) variability pat…
We need you, Uncle Sam: Images of the USA Entry into World War I in Polish School History Textbooks During the First Two Decades of the Twenty-first …
2021
This paper presents an analysis of the content of Polish school textbooks for teaching history in the context of the USA’s entry into World War I in 1917. School textbooks have been chosen as the dominant source of student history knowledge. Fourteen textbooks were analysed: seven for the third stage of education (lower secondary schools) and seven for the fourth stage (upper secondary schools, technical schools). These were used between 2001 and 2017. The USA’s entry into the Great War undoubtedly had a decisive impact on the outcome of the global conflict. The article shows the way in which this subject was presented to students in schools. We analyse the information contained in the text…
The lost mother tongue : An interview study with Finnish war children
2015
This article presents the third study of an interview investigation concerning 10 Finnish war children who were evacuated during the World War II to Sweden and who did not return to live in Finland after the war. The focus is on how they remembered or did not remember their early experiences of displacement and on how they expressed thoughts about their childhood and their adult life. We found that all of them as adults still bore signs of trauma. The younger the children were at the time of the evacuation, the more difficult or even impossible it was for them to think or fantasize about the past. It was consequently not possible for them to work through their experiences of loneliness, abs…
Behavioural strategy of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in response to different kinds of boats in the waters of Lampedusa Island (It…
2013
Owing to the increase of boat-traffic in the ocean many studies have been conducted to determine the response of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) to this kind of disturbance. This species is affected by boats in various ways and the response depends on the behavioural state of the dolphin but also on the kind of vessel. This study aimed to determine the effect of motorboats and trawlers on dolphins' presence, permanence in the area and whistle parameters in Lampedusa waters (Italy). Sampling was carried out between May and December 2006 and between July and September 2009, using experimental passive acoustic monitoring systems (PAM); a total of 300 h of recordings and 3000 whistles w…

In this paper, we analyze an unpublishe…
Video sharing application for educational use: Usability and impacts of participation modes
2014
For the past few years, the use of video lectures in universities has been on the increase. Production of video lectures will bring flexibility that is needed for study and enable the utilization of pedagogical solutions based on new videos. On the other hand, applications for the sharing and use of lecture videos clearly designed for educational requirements are not available. This article introduces an application for the sharing and use of videos. The application was designed and implemented for educational purposes, and it has been in use already for two years. The article examines, with the help of a SUS survey, students' and lecturer's satisfaction with the application and its usabili…
Object Orientation and Conceptual Modeling
1993
The object oriented (OO) approach is very popular nowadays. It has proved to be a powerful and practical programming paradigm for the development of large and complex software systems, including database management systems (DBMS). Among its many benefits are significant improvements in modularity, reusability, flexibility, and extensibility. The database community has already taken advantage of the OO approach and produced a number of OO DBMSs, much faster than in the case of the previous generation of relational systems.
