Geometrical analysis of self-compensating suspension systems for railcar engineering

The present analysis addresses several passive tilt systems for railroad cars aiming to compensate for the cart deficiency on curved tracks. To this end, the virtual centre of suspension must be located as close as possible to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the coach, above the mass centre level for stability reasons. On the one hand, pantograph or Peaucellier's mechanisms may achieve the correct self-compensation. Most conventional suspensions use passive devices to absorb impacts and vibrations, which is generally difficult to adapt to the uncertain circumstances. This paper presents a time-domain approach for analyzing nonlinear random vibrations of long-span suspended cables under transversal wind. A consistent continuous model of the cable, fully accounting for geometrical nonlinearities inherent in cable behavior, is adopted. The effects of spatial correlation are properly included by modeling wind velocity fluctuation as a random function of time and of a single spatial variable ranging over cable span, namely as a one-variate bi-dimensional (1V-2D) random field. This paper describes in detail a computational investigation of a newly-conceived scheme of hydraulic active racing motorcycle suspension and its design application based on a computer-aided control of damping fluid. Balancing ‘flexibility’ and ‘employability’: The changing role of general studies in the Finnish and Swedish VET curricula of the 1990s and 2010s

This article analyses and compares the evolving role of general subjects in the curricula of initial upper secondary vocational education and training (VET) in Finland and Sweden during the 1990s and 2010s. The research illustrates how Bernstein’s concept of ‘pedagogic code’ supports comparative studies on principles guiding changes to curricula and how the role of general studies in VET has been redefined. The findings show that while a principle of ‘market relevance’ has been central to VET over the decades since the 1990s, it has been subject to varying interpretations.
