MMP-2, MMP-9, and iNOS Expression in Human Dental Pulp Subjected to Orthodontic Traction

2009

Abstract Objective: To test the hypothesis that some metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) enzymes in dental pulp samples do not vary when subjected to orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: Human dental pulps were taken from male and female patients (N=10; age 10–14 years). A straight wire technique was used with nickel-titanium or steel archwires. The increase of pressure applied on teeth was gradual. Five patients were subjected to premolar extractions after 14 months of treatment and one after 24 months. Samples were Bouin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, and afterwards processed for immunohistochemistry using anti-MMP-2, anti-MMP-9, and anti-iNO…

Antioxidant activity of anti-inflammatory plant extracts

2002

The antioxidant properties of twenty medical herbs used in the traditional Mediterranean and Chinese medicine were studied. Extracts from Forsythia suspensa, Helichrysum italicum, Scrophularia auriculata, Inula viscosa, Coptis chinensis, Poria cocos and Scutellaria baicalensis had previously shown anti-inflammatory activity in different experimental models. Using free radical-generating systems H. italicum. I. viscosa and F. suspensa protected against enzymatic and non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation in model membranes and also showed scavenging property on the superoxide radical. All extracts were assayed at a concentration of 100 microg/ml. Most of the extracts were weak scavengers of the hy…

Adolescent Exposure to the Synthetic Cannabinoid WIN 55212-2 Modifies Cocaine Withdrawal Symptoms in Adult Mice

2017

Chronic cannabinoid consumption is an increasingly common behavior among teenagers and has been shown to cause long-lasting neurobehavioral alterations. Besides, it has been demonstrated that cocaine addiction in adulthood is highly correlated with cannabis abuse during adolescence. Cocaine consumption and subsequent abstinence from it can cause psychiatric symptoms, such as psychosis, cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression. The aim of the present research was to study the consequences of adolescent exposure to cannabis on the psychiatric-like effects promoted by cocaine withdrawal in adult mice. We pre-treated juvenile mice with the cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist WIN 55212-2 (WIN)…

Refractory congestive heart failure: when the solution is outside the heart

2020

Abstract Refractory congestive heart failure is associated with an ominous prognosis in which the treatments strategies remain scarce and not well validated. In the last years, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) has emerged as a therapeutic alternative in this subset of patients. So far, it has been associated with a significant improvement in functional capacity and quality of life, together with a striking reduction in the risk of readmissions. We present the case of an elderly patient with severe left ventricular dysfunction and severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation who presents recurrent admissions for anasarca. After its inclusion in a CAPD programme, the patient expe…

Cannabidiol prevents several of the behavioral alterations related to cocaine addiction in mice.

2021

Abstract Cocaine dependence is a highly prevalent disease in modern society and lacks an effective treatment. Cannabidiol (CBD), a major non-psychoactive constituent of Cannabis sativa, has been shown to be a promising tool in the management of some neuropsychiatric disorders, including cocaine abuse. However, its therapeutic effects on the behavioral outcomes related to cocaine addiction remain unclear. The present research evaluates the effects of CBD (30, 60 and 120 mg/kg; injected intraperitoneally) on the acquisition, expression, extinction and reinstatement of cocaine (10 mg/kg)-induced conditioned place preference (CPP; Study 1); cocaine (25 mg/kg)-induced locomotor stimulation (Stud…

Antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of alprazolam versus the conventional. antidepressant desipramine and the anxiolytic diazepam in the forced swi…

1992

The antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of alprazolam were compared to those of desipramine, diazepam and buspirone in the forced swim test. Subchronic alprazolam induced a reduction in immobility similar to that of desipramine in 'non-pretested' and 'pretested' rats. In 'non-pretested' rats, the anti-immobility effect of desipramine was potentiated by diazepam and alprazolam, given before subchronic desipramine, while the anti-immobility effect of subchronic alprazolam was counteracted by diazepam. Diazepam, administered before the pretest session, counteracted, 24 h later, the anti-immobility effect of subchronic desipramine and alprazolam; alprazolam counteracted the anti-immobility ef…

Bicuspid aortic valve and unruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm, a rare association

2016

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is one of the most common forms of congenital heart defect and is associated with other congenital vascular and cardiac defects. The most common comorbidity is dilation of thoracic aorta and clinical manifestations are usually related to function of the aortic valve and to other cardiovascular acquired complications. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is an uncommon congenital cardiovascular anomaly and the combination of these two anomalies is very rare. Common complications are rupture and obstruction of the termination chamber due to space-occupying effect of large unruptured aneurysms. Early cardiac imaging can help limiting morbidity and mortality in these pat…

Patients with bicuspid aortic valve are likely to receive an aortic valve prosthesis during prophylactic resection of their ascending aortic aneurysm.

2015

This study aims to evaluate whether thepresence or discovery of a BAV under ATAA repair would impactthe decision-making of the surgical procedure choice.

Prevalence and characteristics of coronary artery disease in a population with suspected ischaemic heart disease using CT coronary angiography: corre…

2008

Purpose. This study was undertaken to describe the correlation between the distribution of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a symptomatic population with suspected ischaemic heart disease, cardiovascular risk factors (RF) and clinical presentation. Materials and methods. We studied 163 patients (mean age 65.5 years; 101 men and 62 women) referred for multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography (MDCT-CA) to rule out CAD. The patients had no prior history of revascularisation or myocardial infarction. We analysed how the characteristics of CAD (severity and type of plaque) can change with the increase in RF and how they are related to different clinical presentations. Results. Pati…

Cardiopulmonary Hemodynamic Profile Predicts Mortality After Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Repair in Chronic Heart Failure.

2020

This study was designed to assess hemodynamic changes in response to transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair (TTVR) and to identify hemodynamic predictors associated with mortality.Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with high mortality. TTVR effectively alleviates heart failure symptoms, but comprehensive hemodynamic characterization of patients undergoing TTVR is currently lacking. This international, multicenter study included 236 patients undergoing TTVR. Data from clinical assessment, echocardiography, intraprocedural right heart catheterization, and noninvasive cardiac output measurement were analyzed. Hemodynamic predictors for mortality were identified using l…
