Failing to Provide Public Goods: Why the Afghan Army Did Not Fight

The theory of public goods is mainly about the difficulty in paying for them. Our question here is this: Why might public goods not be provided, even if funding is available? We use the Afghan Army as our case study. We explore this issue using a simple model of a public good that can be provided through collective action and peer pressure, by modeling the self-organization of a group (the Afghan Army) as a mechanism design problem. We consider two kinds of transfer subsidies from an external entity such as the U.S. government. One is a Pigouvian subsidy that simply pays the salaries, rewarding individuals who provide effort. Bakalaura darbā „Rīgas lietuvieša sociolingvistiskais portrets“ veikta Rīgas lietuvieša sociolingvistiskā portreta konstruēšana, pamatojoties uz dažādiem ekstralingvistiskiem faktoriem. Darbā iekļauti trīs detalizēti teicēju apraksti, atklājot viņu lingvistiskās identitātes iezīmes. Aprakstīta viņu lingvistiskā kompetence, izplatītākie kļūdu veidi un būtiskas atkāpes leksikas lietojumā teicēju pārstāvētās sociolingvistiskās grupas ietvaros. Katra teicēja individuālās lingvistiskās iezīmes pamatotas, sasaistot tās ar teicēju dzīves gājumu un konkrētiem sociolingvistiskiem procesiem, kas verētu būt ietekmējuši konkrētā teicēja lingvistisko pieredzi.

"Ai saako soittaa mitä vain?" : vasta-alkaja kitaristien tavat lähestyä improvisaatiota

Tässä opinnäytteessä tutkin vasta-alkajien musiikillista improvisaatiota. Tarkoituksenani oli selvittää kuinka vastaalkaja kitaristit ilman aiempaa kokemusta lähestyvät musiikillista improvisaatiota. Lähdin tutkimaan aihetta kitaratunneilla järjestämieni käytännön improvisaatiotehtävien kautta. Tutkimukseen osallistui seitsemän kitaraoppilastani, joista kuusi oli 7–13-vuotiaita ja yksi 35-vuotias. Aineistona työssäni käytin 57 videoitua improvisaatiotehtävää; viideltä oppilaalta jokaiselta yhdeksää ja kahdelta kuutta. Improvisaatiotehtävät oli jaettu kolmeen vaiheeseen: 1. kolmen miellyttävän sävelen vapaaseen etsintään sekä 2. vuorotellen ja 3. yksin improvisointiin näillä valituilla sävel…
