Clinical use of BCG and its complications: a case series
2021
Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a live, attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, is the essential constituent of the vaccine against tuberculosis and the gold-standard adjuvant treatment for urothelial cancer of the bladder. Being a live, attenuated strain with a potential pathogenic action, bacilli can cause several complications, both locally near the inoculation site and remotely through blood dissemination. BCG-related disease can represent a side effect of anti-TB vaccination in patient with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency or a complication of the therapeutic schedule in oncologic patients. Herein we report five cases of BCG-related disease which occurred at the Infectious Dis…

IntroductionBowel perforation is a relatively rare presentation of abdominal tuberculosis, whose diagnosis is challenging but fundamental to minimize morbidity and mortality. Laparoscopy is considered an effective modality for diagnosis, but its role in surgical treatment is still not established. We reported the first worldwide case of totally laparoscopic treatment of intestinal tuberculosis complicated with bowel perforation.Case presentationA 30-year-old man with a history of weight loss, preceded by 2 years of nonproductive cough, was admitted to the Infectious Disease Department with a presumed diagnosis of tuberculosis. A microbiological culture test confirmed the diagnosis, and the …

Le infezioni tubercolari dell’apparato locomotore
2010

DOWN REGULATION OF LYMPHOCYTES APOPTOSIS IN GIRLS WITH PRECOCIOUS PUBERTY
2011
The effects of sexual hormones secretion in children with precocious puberty induce significant somatic and psychological changes, with systemic implications on several organs and tissues. Besides immune system and blood cells are involved in these changes. Recent studies on mice lymphocytes have demonstrated a protection of estrogens against apoptosis Fas-FasL pathway. These data could partially elucidate why autoimmune diseases are more frequent in females adolescents, whereas males have higher mortality associated with infectious diseases. We studied ten girls (age: 4-7 years) affected by idiopathic precocious puberty, with pubertal stage B3-PH3-4. All presented increased bone age/chrono…

Introduzione.
