Ethylene modulates gene expression in cells of the marine sponge Suberites domuncula and reduces the degree of apoptosis.

1999

Sponges (phylum Porifera) live in an aqueous milieu that contains dissolved organic carbon. This is degraded photochemically by ultraviolet radiation to alkenes, particularly to ethylene. This study demonstrates that sponge cells (here the demosponge Suberites domuncula has been used), which have assembled to primmorphs, react to 5 microM ethylene with a significant up-regulation of intracellular Ca(2+) concentration and with a reduction of starvation-induced apoptosis. In primmorphs from S. domuncula the expression of two genes is up-regulated after exposure to ethylene. The cDNA of the first gene (SDERR) isolated from S. domuncula encodes a potential ethylene-responsive protein, termed ER…

The yopJ locus is required for Yersinia-mediated inhibition of NF-kappaB activation and cytokine expression: YopJ contains a eukaryotic SH2-like doma…

1998

Upon exposure to bacteria, eukaryotic cells activate signalling pathways that result in the increased expression of several defence-related genes. Here, we report that the yopJ locus of the enteropathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis encodes a protein that inhibits the activation of NF-kappaB transcription factors by a mechanism(s), which prevents the phosphorylation and subsequent degradation of the inhibitor protein IkappaB. Consequently, eukaryotic cells infected with YopJ-expressing Yersinia become impaired in NF-kappaB-dependent cytokine expression. In addition, the blockage of inducible cytokine production coincides with yopJ-dependent induction of apoptosis. Interestingly, the YopJ pr…

EVOLUTION OF THE INNATE AND ADAPTIVE IMMUNE SYSTEMS

1999

Porifera (sponge) form the lowest metazoan phylum and share a common ancestor with other metazoan phyla. In the present study, it is reported that sponges possess molecules that are similar in structure to those molecules involved in the immune system in mammals. Experiments with the marine sponges Geodia cydonium and Suberites domuncula have been performed on tissue (auto- and allografting) as well as on a cellular level. The studies revealed that sponges are provided with elements of the mammalian innate immune system, such as molecules containing scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domains. Furthermore, macrophage-derived cytokine-like molecules have been identified that are up-regulated du…

2005

Origins of the blemishes of potato tubers : from the soil microbiology to the pedoclimatic environment

2010

The visual quality of fresh potatoes, Solanum tuberosum, became a dominant criterion and a significative economical issue in potato market. According the vegetative reproduction of this species, requirements for visual quality are also needed for potato seed tubers. As an organ for reserve and propagation, the tuber grows underground and is in contact with soil-borne microorganisms, making it potentially exposed to blemishes, for the majority of which the origin is still unclear. The objective of this work is to make an inventory of those tuber blemishes, to characterize them and determine their causes. After the establishment of consensual nomenclature and classification of the blemishes, …
