2008

In a retrospective study of 39 girls (aged 10 months to 7 10/12 years) with premature breast development criteria for distinguishing between premature thelarche and precocious puberty were analysed. Serum estradiol levels and bone age were determined and a test with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) performed (inclusion criteria). On the basis of the LHRH test and bone age, premature thelarche was diagnosed in 29 patients and precocious puberty in ten: while those with premature thelarche had a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) pattern of rise, in those with precocious puberty the rise in gonadotropin was of the LH type. The LH/FSH ratio 30 min after stimulation was 1 (median 2.…

Origin of Insulin Receptor-Like Tyrosine Kinases in Marine Sponges

1999

One autapomorphic character restricted to all Metazoa including Porifera [sponges] is the existence of transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs). In this study we screened for molecules from one subfamily within the superfamily of the insulin receptors. The subfamily includes the insulin receptors (InsR), the insulin-like growth factor I receptors, and the InsR-related receptors--all found in vertebrates--as well as the InsR-homolog from Drosophila melanogaster. cDNAs encoding putative InsRs were isolated from the hexactinellid sponge Aphrocallistes vastus, the demosponge Suberites domuncula, and the calcareous sponge Sycon raphanus. Phylogenetic analyses of the catalytic domains of th…

Clinical and metabolic findings in a 6-year-old boy with a Leydig cell tumour

2011

Aim:  To analyse the urinary steroid metabolome in a boy who had true precocious puberty after a Leydig cell tumour. Method:  Case report and detailed description of clinical and metabolic findings in a 7-year-old-boy with a Leydig cell tumour. Results:  Before surgery, the urinary steroid metabolome showed an activation of an alternative route to gonadal androgens independent of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). After surgery, the boy entered true precocious puberty. Under leuprolide acetate treatment, clinical and laboratory findings normalized. Conclusion:  Central precocious puberty after precocious pseudopuberty may be more common than expected and should be considered in children with pe…

2018

Ecogeographic characterization of Melloco (Ullucus tuberosus C.) in the high Andean region of Ecuador

Initiation of an Aquaculture of Sponges for the Sustainable Production of Bioactive Metabolites in Open Systems: Example, Geodia cydonium.

1999

Among Metazoa, sponges (phylum Porifera) are the richest source for different bioactive compounds. The availability of the raw material is, however, restricted. To obtain enough of the bioactive compounds for application in human therapy, sponges have to be cultured in in vitro systems. One technique for the establishment of a long-term cell culture from sponges has recently been elaborated. Here, we present a procedure to cultivate tissue samples from sponges in an open system. The species Geodia cydonium, which produces bioactive compounds, has been selected. Tissue samples of approximately 10 g were attached to the bottoms of cultivation trays. After 2 to 3 days, the tissue samples forme…

Olfactory and cortical projections to bulbar and hippocampal adult-born neurons

2015

New neurons are continually generated in the subependymal layer of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone of dentate gyrus during adulthood. In the subventricular zone, neuroblasts migrate a long distance to the olfactory bulb where they differentiate into granule or periglomerular interneurons. In the hippocampus, neuroblasts migrate a short distance from the subgranular zone to the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus to become granule neurons. In addition to the short-distance inputs, bulbar interneurons receive long-distance centrifugal afferents from olfactory-recipient structures. Similarly, dentate granule cells receive differential inputs from the medial and lateral ento…
