Learning-automaton-based online discovery and tracking of spatiotemporal event patterns.

2013

Discovering and tracking of spatiotemporal patterns in noisy sequences of events are difficult tasks that have become increasingly pertinent due to recent advances in ubiquitous computing, such as community-based social networking applications. The core activities for applications of this class include the sharing and notification of events, and the importance and usefulness of these functionalities increase as event sharing expands into larger areas of one's life. Ironically, instead of being helpful, an excessive number of event notifications can quickly render the functionality of event sharing to be obtrusive. Indeed, any notification of events that provides redundant information to the…

Automated Synthesis of Application-layer Connectors from Automata-based Specifications

2019

Abstract Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing, and the Internet of Things, promote dynamic interaction among heterogeneous systems. To achieve this vision, interoperability among heterogeneous systems represents a key enabler, and mediators are often built to solve protocol mismatches. Many approaches propose the synthesis of mediators. Unfortunately, a rigorous characterization of the concept of interoperability is still lacking, hence making hard to assess their applicability and soundness. In this paper, we provide a framework for the synthesis of mediators that allows us to: (i) characterize the conditions for the mediator existence and correctness; and (ii) establish the applicability bo…

Toward fast and accurate emergency cases detection in BSNs

2020

International audience; In body sensor networks (BSNs), medical sensors capture physiological data from the human body and send them to the coordinator who act as a gateway to health care. The main aim of BSNs is to save peoples' lives. Therefore, fast and correct detection of emergencies while maintaining low-energy consumption of sensors is essential requirement of BSNs. In this study, the authors propose a new adaptive data sampling approach, where the sampling ratio is adapted based on the sensed data variation. The idea is to use the modified version of the cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm (modified CUSUM) that they previously proposed for wireless sensor networks to monitor the data v…

Optimization on ports activation towards energy efficient data center networks

2018

Nowadays, Internet of thing including network support (i.e. checking social media, sending emails, video conferencing) requires smart and efficient data centers to support these services. Hence, data centers become more important and must be able to respond to ever changing service requirements and application demands. However, data centers are classified as one of the largest consumers of energy in the world. Existing topologies such as ScalNet improves the data center scalability while leading to enormous amounts of energy consumption. In this paper, we present a new energy efficient algorithm for ScalNet called Green ScalNet. The proposed topology strikes a compromise between maximizing …

An expert system for vineyard management based upon ubiquitous network technologies

2011

Vineyard operations for quality wines production are currently based upon costly and time-consuming manual sampling operations required to assess the maturity phases of grapevines. The ripening process however is significantly influenced by the environmental parameters which nowadays can be effectively monitored by means of ubiquitous computing technologies. Besides the possibility of gathering data, hence, suitable tools are required to support the vineyard management process. The present research concerns the development of an expert system to effectively manage the vineyard operations. The methodology is based on the analysis of the time series of indices related to the maturation phases…

Ubiquitous Co-Driver System and Its Effects on the Situation Awareness of the Driver

2008

The aim of this paper is to explore the effects of ubiquitous computing in cars on the situation awareness and expectations of the driver. In a driving simulation environment with participants using a co-driver system, we investigated how people took and recovered from misinformation provided by the system. The system presented safety-critical information about the upcoming curves on the road, but in the experiment part of the messages contained false information. The effects of this information on participants’ behavior were investigated. On the grounds of the experiment, we discuss two approaches for investigating drivers’ situational awareness, which are based on either mental workload o…

An Application of Ant Colony Optimization to Decision Making on Affective Virtual Entities

2007

Learning is a never ending activity for humans; it takes place everywhere and even when we do not realize. However, current learning environments make students deal with lectures, mostly associated with low control of the situation and implicit motivation. In contrast, previous researches have shown that sports, games or hobbies are activities that make people reach optimal experiences where self-motivation, control of the situation, high level of concentration and enjoyment are present. Some current efforts to design next generation of learning environments make use of ubiquitous systems to encourage students to perform learning activities everywhere and at anytime. However, those approach…

Finding optimal finite biological sequences over finite alphabets: the OptiFin toolbox

2017

International audience; In this paper, we present a toolbox for a specific optimization problem that frequently arises in bioinformatics or genomics. In this specific optimisation problem, the state space is a set of words of specified length over a finite alphabet. To each word is associated a score. The overall objective is to find the words which have the lowest possible score. This type of general optimization problem is encountered in e.g 3D conformation optimisation for protein structure prediction, or largest core genes subset discovery based on best supported phylogenetic tree for a set of species. In order to solve this problem, we propose a toolbox that can be easily launched usin…

Investigating Low Level Protocols for Wireless Body Sensor Networks

2016

The rapid development of medical sensors has increased the interest in Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications where physiological data from the human body and its environment is gathered, monitored, and analyzed to take the proper measures. In WBANs, it is essential to design MAC protocols that ensure adequate Quality of Service (QoS) such as low delay and high scalability. This paper investigates Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols used in WBAN, and compares their performance in a high traffic environment. Such scenario can be induced in case of emergency for example, where physiological data collected from all sensors on human body should be sent simultaneously to take appropria…

Efficient and accurate monitoring of the depth information in a Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network based surveillance

2017

International audience; Abstract—Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is a promising technology capturing rich multimedia data like audio and video, which can be useful to monitor an environment under surveillance. However, many scenarios in real time monitoring requires 3D depth information. In this research work, we propose to use the disparity map that is computed from two or multiple images, in order to monitor the depth information in an object or event under surveillance using WMSN. Our system is based on distributed wireless sensors allowing us to notably reduce the computational time needed for 3D depth reconstruction, thus permitting the success of real time solutions. Each pa…
