Young woman with Branchio-Oto-Renal Syndrome and a novel mutation in the EYA-1 gene
2011
Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease clinically characterized by the coexistence of some or all of the following major disorders: deafness, cervical branchial fistulae, preauricular pits, and renal abnormalities. Most families with BOR syndrome have mutations on the EYA-1 gene on chromosome 8q. We present the case of a 23-year-old Italian woman without a familial history of BOR syndrome. The patient, who had hearing loss and a history of surgeries for correction of bilateral cervical branchial fistulae and bilateral preauricular pits, presented with renal impairment, hypertension and overt proteinuria. DNA sequencing showed a novel heterozygous mutation 1420-14…

Ultrasound Imaging Evaluation of Textural Features in Athletes with Soleus Pathology—A Novel Case-Control Study
2021
Background: the aim of this study was to compare the echotexture of patients with soleus muscle injury and age matched controls. Methods: a sample of 62 athletes was recruited at the private clinic and was divided in two group: a healthy group (n=31) and a soleus pathology group whose athletes had soleus muscle injury, located in the central tendon (n=31). The muscle thickness (MTh), echointensity (EI) and echovariation (EV) were analyzed. An intra-rater reliability test (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient-ICC) was performed in order to analyze the reliability of the values of the measurements. Results: Sociodemographic variables did not show statistically significant differences (p >
Alport's syndrome: specificity and pathogenesis of glomerular basement membrane alterations.
1987
In Alport's syndrome (AS) thinning and splitting of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) are assumed to be characteristic ultrastructural alterations. Both lesions are, however, non-specific because they can occur in other glomerulopathies. In addition, splitting may be found in non-glomerular structures. It should be emphasized that the characteristic lesion in AS is a result of the widespread combination of thin and split GBM in the same biopsy specimen. In our opinion the basic lesion is the thin GBM, which is characterized by a lamina densa (measuring 50-150 nm in thickness) which may begin to split as a result of focal detachment of podocyte pedicles (spacing) and repeated subepithel…
Unusual pattern of gastric and hepatic infiltration in an infant with acute monocytic leukemia
1995
A 10-month-old girl with acute monocytic leukemia is presented. Ultrasound of the abdomen on admission showed an unusual distribution of leukemia infiltrates in the stomach and liver. The leukemic infiltrates in the wall of the stomach presented as intraluminal polyps, while the leukemic infiltration of the liver was strictly confined to the portal vessels.
Electron microscopic studies on skin and lymphocytes in early juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.
1987
Skin and lymphocytes of three patients with early juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL) were ultras trueturally investigated. Fingerprint profiles (FPP), isolated and I or mixed with curvilinear profiles (CLP), in various dermal cells and large, usually single lipopigments delineated by a trilaminar membrane and filled with a granular matrix, FPP and occasionally lipid droplets in lymphocytes were observed in all three patients. Characteristic lipopigments in lymphocytes are an important feature to differentiate between early juvenile NCL and late infantile and juvenile NCL.
Assessment of the fundamental flexural guided wave in cortical bone by an ultrasonic axial-transmission array transducer
2013
Abstract The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW), as modeled, for example, by the A0 Lamb mode, is a clinically useful indicator of cortical bone thickness. In the work described in this article, we tested so-called multiridge-based analysis, based on the crazy climber algorithm and short-time Fourier transform, for assessment of the FFGW component recorded by a clinical array transducer featuring a limited number of elements. Methods included numerical finite-element simulations and experiments in bone phantoms and human radius specimens ( n = 41). The proposed approach enabled extraction of the FFGW component and determination of its group velocity. This group velocity was in good ag…
HMB-45 Immunostaining and Ultrastructure of Melanocytic Hyperplasia in Pigmented Basal Cell Carcinomas
1999
The pigmented variant of basal cell carcinoma (PBCC) may be clinically misinterpreted as malignant melanoma. Histologically this variant is characterized by the presence of functional melanocytes distributed among epithelial tumor cells, particularly in superficial areas. Our finding of a case of PBCC with numerous atypical HMB-45-positive melanocytes prompted us to analyze the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of 20 consecutive cases of PBCC. Four additional cases with numerous large HMB-45-positive melanocytes, also present in the most invasive tumor nests, were found. Ultrastructural examination was performed in two selected cases. Large melanocytes with immature (stages I an…
Comparative imaging of structure and metabolites in tumours.
1991
A novel technique for metabolic imaging using quantitative bioluminescence and single photon imaging was used to measure the distribution of ATP and lactate in two types of human melanoma xenografts with different radiobiologically hypoxic cell fractions (MF: 45 +/- 17% and EE: 6 +/- 3%; mean +/- SD). The tumours were s.c. grown in nude mice and were used for measurement at volumes of 153-3072 mm3. For metabolic imaging the rapidly frozen tumours were serially sectioned, and each cryosection was brought into contact with a frozen bioluminescent enzyme cocktail using a specially designed glass sandwich system. After thawing section and cocktail the luminescence was started, and light was emi…
