Photochemical and photobiological studies with acridine and phenanthridine hydroperoxides in cell-free DNA.

The acridine and phenanthridine hydroperoxides 3 and 7 were synthesized as photochemical hydroxyl radical sources for oxidative DNA damage studies. The generation of hydroxyl radicals upon UVA irradiation (lambda = 350 nm) was verified by trapping experiments with 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide and benzene. The enzymatic assays of the damage in cell-free DNA from bacteriophage PM2 caused by the acridine and phenanthridine hydroperoxides 3 and 7 under near-UVA irradiation revealed a wide range of DNA modifications. Ultrafast electron transfer in photosynthesis: reduced pheophytin and quinone interaction mediated by conical intersections.

The mechanism of electron transfer (ET) from reduced pheophytin (Pheo(-)) to the primary stable photosynthetic acceptor, a quinone (Q) molecule, is addressed by using high-level ab initio computations and realistic molecular models. The results reveal that the ET process involving the (Pheo(-) + Q) and (Pheo + Q(-)) oxidation states can be essentially seen as an ultrafast radiationless transition between the two hypersurfaces taking place via conical intersections (CIs). We study the nonlinear mean-field dynamics of diatomic molecule formation at coherent photo- and magneto-association of ultracold atoms focusing on the case when the system is initially in the all-atomic state. We show that in the limit of strongly nonlinear interaction between an ultra-cold atomic-molecular system and a quasi-resonant electromagnetic field, the molecule formation process, depending on the characteristics of the associating field, may evolve according two different scenarios, namely, weak- and strong-oscillatory regimes. Selective Excitation of Guided Waves into Bone Phantoms by a Time-Delayed Laser Diode Array

We excite selectively the Ao and So plate mode into an acrylic bone phantom using a laser diode array. This is done by controlling the time delay between the signals driving the array elements. Selective mode generation is important because it can potentially increase the sensitivity of in vivo osteoporosis screening.
Photo-acoustic phase-delayed excitation of guided waves in coated bone phantoms

Photo-acoustic skeletal quantitative ultrasound enables assessment of the fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) propagating in bone. This mode, consistent with the F(1,1) tube mode can now be measured through a coating of soft tissue. Interference due to ultrasound propagation in the soft tissue surrounding the bone is reduced by using phase-delayed ultrasound excitation. Photo-acoustic phase-delayed excitation was done on five axisymmetric bone phantoms (1-5 mm wall thickness), coated by a 5 mm thick soft-tissue mimicking layer. Photobiological activities of the benzo-spaced psoralen analog furonaphthopyranone 3 have been investigated in cell-free and cellular DNA. The molecular geometry parameters of 3 suggest that it should not form interstrand crosslinks with DNA. With cell-free DNA no evidence for crosslinking but also not for monoadduct formation was obtained; rather, the unnatural furocoumarin 3 induces oxidative DNA modifications under near-UVA irradiation. The enzymatic assay of the photosensitized damage in cell-free PM2 DNA revealed the significant formation of lesions sensitive to formamidopyrimidine DNA glycosylase (Fpg protein). The photoinduced competitive rearrangements of 5-perfluoroalkyl-3-amino(N-alkylamino)-1,2,4-oxadia- zoles have been investigated by DFT calculations and UV-vis spectroscopy. The observed product selectivity depends on the number of hydrogen atoms present in the amino moiety and involves two or three possible routes: (i) ring contraction-ring expansion (RCRE), (ii) internal-cyclization isomerization (ICI), or (iii) C(3)-N(2) migration-nucleophilic attack-cyclization (MNAC). Ultrasonic Guided Wave Inspection of Bonded Lap Joints: Noncontact Method and Photoelastic Visualization

The main topic of this paper is the nondestructive inspection of adhesively bonded lap joints by using ultrasonic guided (plate) waves. A noncontact, couplant-free method that employs capacitive air-coupled transducers is demonstrated for the inspection of thin aluminum joints with dimensions typical of aircraft fuselage and wing panels. Two types of bond defects, disbonded regions and regions of poorly cured (low-cohesive-strength) adhesive, are successfully detected by measuring the amplitude decrease of selected plate waves leaking from one adherend to the other one through the bondline. Experimental and theoretical studies of polaron optical properties in KNbO3 perovskite

Time-resolved absorption and luminescence spectra have been measured in KNbO3 perovskite crystals after pulsed band-gap excitation by 200 fs laser pulses and 10 ns electron pulses. Quantum chemical calculations using the large unit cell periodic model support the interpretation of the observed transient absorption bands at 0.8 and 1.1 eV as the self-trapped electron polarons and bound hole polarons, respectively. The activation energy for the 2.2 eV green luminescence quenching is 0.05 eV. We suggest that the short lifetime (,15 ns) of the luminescence at RT is caused by the radiative recombination of nearest electron and hole polarons. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
X‐ray and pulsed electron beam excited luminescence and optical absorption in KTaO 3 crystals

Pulsed electron beam excited time-resolved transient absorption and luminescence have been studied in nominally pure and Li-doped KTaO3 single crystals. It is found that under electron beam excitation in nominally pure KTaO3 the absorption bands peaks at ∼0.8 eV, ∼1.1 eV and 1.7 eV whereas in KTaO3:Li at ∼1.1 eV and ∼1.7 eV. The transient absorption decay varies over the spectrum thus revealing several short-lived centers. The main luminescence peak is centred at ∼2.7 eV in all KTaO3 specimens. Luminescence decay kinetics observed for the two bands slightly differ indicating different kinds of excited states are involved. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
