R2phase diagram of quantum Einstein gravity and its spectral dimension

2012

Within the gravitational asymptotic safety program, the renormalization group (RG) flow of the ${R}^{2}$ truncation in three and four spacetime dimensions is analyzed in detail. In particular, we construct RG trajectories which emanate from the non-Gaussian UV fixed point and possess long classical regimes where the effective average action is well approximated by the classical Einstein-Hilbert action. As an application we study the spectral dimension of the effective quantum Einstein gravity spacetimes resulting from these trajectories, establishing that the picture of a multifractal spacetime is robust under the extension of the truncated theory space. We demonstrate that regimes of const…

Update on decaying and annihilating heavy dark matter with the 6-year IceCube HESE data

2019

In view of the IceCube's 6-year high-energy starting events (HESE) sample, we revisit the possibility that the updated data may be better explained by a combination of neutrino fluxes from dark matter decay and an isotropic astrophysical power-law than purely by the latter. We find that the combined two-component flux qualitatively improves the fit to the observed data over a purely astrophysical one, and discuss how these updated fits compare against a similar analysis done with the 4-year HESE data. We also update fits involving dark matter decay via multiple channels, without any contribution from the astrophysical flux. We find that a DM-only explanation is not excluded by neutrino data…

Ultraviolet Fixed Point and Generalized Flow Equation of Quantum Gravity

2001

A new exact renormalization group equation for the effective average action of Euclidean quantum gravity is constructed. It is formulated in terms of the component fields appearing in the transverse-traceless decomposition of the metric. It facilitates both the construction of an appropriate infrared cutoff and the projection of the renormalization group flow onto a large class of truncated parameter spaces. The Einstein-Hilbert truncation is investigated in detail and the fixed point structure of the resulting flow is analyzed. Both a Gaussian and a non-Gaussian fixed point are found. If the non-Gaussian fixed point is present in the exact theory, quantum Einstein gravity is likely to be r…

Fermion masses and the UV cutoff of the minimal realistic SU(5)

2006

We investigate the predictions for fermion masses in the minimal realistic non-supersymmetric SU(5) model with the Standard Model matter content. The possibility to achieve b-\tau unification is studied taking into account all relevant effects. In addition, we show how to establish an upper bound on the ultraviolet cutoff \Lambda of the theory which is compatible with the Yukawa couplings at the grand unified scale and proton decay. We find \Lambda \simeq 10^{17} GeV, to be considered a conservative upper bound on the cutoff. We also provide up-to-date values of all the fermions masses at the electroweak scale.

The relative role of EUV radiation and X-rays in the heating of hydrogen-rich exoplanet atmospheres

2009

Aims. We study the relative role of EUV and X-ray radiation in the heating of hydrogen-rich planet atmospheres with different composition and electron content. Methods. An accurate photo-ionization model has been used to follow the primary photo-electron energy deposition throughout the atmosphere. Results. Heating rates and efficiencies have been computed, together with column density cut-offs at which photons of given energies stop their heating production inside the atmosphere. Assuming 100 eV as the energy borderline between the extreme ultraviolet spectral range and X-rays we find that when the absorbing hydrogen column density is higher than 10 20 cm −2 only X-rays can heat the gas. Temperature Distribution of a Non-flaring Active Region from Simultaneous Hinode XRT and EIS Observations

2011

We analyze coordinated Hinode XRT and EIS observations of a non-flaring active region to investigate the thermal properties of coronal plasma taking advantage of the complementary diagnostics provided by the two instruments. In particular we want to explore the presence of hot plasma in non-flaring regions. Independent temperature analyses from the XRT multi-filter dataset, and the EIS spectra, including the instrument entire wavelength range, provide a cross-check of the different temperature diagnostics techniques applicable to broad-band and spectral data respectively, and insights into cross-calibration of the two instruments. The emission measure distribution, EM(T), we derive from the…

Attosecond control of dissociative ionization of O2molecules

2011

We demonstrate that dissociative ionization of O(2) can be controlled by the relative delay between an attosecond pulse train (APT) and a copropagating infrared (IR) field. Our experiments reveal a dependence of both the branching ratios between a range of electronic states and the fragment angular distributions on the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) to IR time delay. The observations go beyond adiabatic propagation of dissociative wave packets on IR-induced quasistatic potential energy curves and are understood in terms of an IR-induced coupling between electronic states in the molecular ion.

Gamma Ray Astronomy - An Overview of the Galactic Diffuse Emission: The Origin and Confinement of Cosmic Rays

1989

Gamma-ray Astronomy investigates the electromagnetic radiation coming from Outer Space in the energy range above~100 KeV, bordering and mixing on the low energy side with the upper end of X-Ray Astronomy; no limit is indicated on the high energy side if not that imposed by the vanishing intensity of the incoming flux (Fig.1).
