FableAnimals from the ClassicalTradition in La Gran Conquista deUltramar

2021

EnglishThe chronicle entitled La Gran Conquista de Ultramar brings up a much more rich literary samplethan expected because of its genre. Our contribution considers theinsertion ofelements taken from the animal fable and the anthropological narration, both within the Classical tradition.

The influence of soft acidic drinks in exposing dentinal tubules after non-surgical periodontal treatment: a SEM investigation on the protective effe…

2007

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the different smear layer morphologies produced by instrumentation with a hand curette and a periodontal sonic scaler for potential removal by soft acidic solution. The effect of a new oxalate-containing phytocomplex spray in preventing tubules exposure after citric acid solution application was also evaluated. Methods: Thirty recently extracted human teeth were used to obtain root dentinal fragments and divided in two groups: Curette treatment (CRT) root planed applying 30 working strokes to each surface using a Gracey?s curette 5-6 and Ultrasonic scaler (USC) treated using a periodontal scaler mounted on an ultrasonic hand-piece for 30 s…

Analysis of ultra-triathlon performances

2011

Romuald Lepers1, Beat Knechtle2,3, Patrizia Knechtle2, Thomas Rosemann2 1INSERM U887, Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Burgundy, Dijon, France; 2Institute of General Practice and Health Services Research, University of Zurich, Switzerland; 3Gesundheitszentrum St Gallen, St Gallen, Switzerland Abstract: Despite increased interest in ultra-endurance events, little research has examined ultra-triathlon performance. The aims of this study were: (i) to compare swimming, cycling, running, and overall performances in three ultra-distance triathlons, double Ironman distance triathlon (2IMT) (7.6 km swimming, 360 km cycling, and 84.4 km running), triple Ironman distance triathlon (3IMT) (11.…

The nasus gland: A new gland in soldiers of Angularitermes (Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae)

2015

Termites have developed many exocrine glands, generally dedicated to defence or communication. Although a few of these glands occur in all termite species, or represent synapomorphies of larger clades, others are morphological innovations of a single species, or a few related species. Here, we describe the nasus gland, a new gland occurring at the base of the nasus of Angularitermes soldiers. The nasus gland is composed of class 1, 2, and 3 secretory cells, a rare combination that is only shared by the sternal and tergal glands of some termites and cockroaches. The ultrastructural observations suggest that the secretion is produced by class 2 and 3 secretory cells, and released mostly by cl…

A study of VUV emission and the extracted electron-ion ratio in hydrogen and deuterium plasmas of a filament-driven H−/D− ion source

2019

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission diagnostics for studying differences of electron impact processes in hydrogen and deuterium plasmas are presented. The method is applied to study a filament driven multicusp arc discharge negative ion source by comparing the VUV-emission intensities of different emission bands and extracted currents of H−/D− ions and electrons. It was found that the ratio of coextracted electrons to extracted ions is four times higher for deuterium than for hydrogen. No significant differences of the VUV-spectra or volumetric rates of ionization, excitation, production of high vibrational states, and dissociation were found between the plasmas of the two isotopes. The volum…

Tailoring oxide properties: An impact on adsorption characteristics of molecules and metals

2014

Abstract Both density functional theory calculations and numerous experimental studies demonstrate a variety of unique features in metal supported oxide films and transition metal doped simple oxides, which are markedly different from their unmodified counterparts. This review highlights, from the computational perspective, recent literature on the properties of the above mentioned surfaces and how they adsorb and activate different species, support metal aggregates, and even catalyse reactions. The adsorption of Au atoms and clusters on metal-supported MgO films are reviewed together with the cluster׳s theoretically predicted ability to activate and dissociate O 2 at the Au–MgO(100)/Ag(100…

Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency: state of the art and research challenges

2012

This review discusses a potential vascular basis for multiple sclerosis (MS). The idea that MS could be related to vascular disease is not new, with the first reports describing connections between veins and MS plaques dating from the 19th century. The venous abnormalities found in MS patients, the socalled chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, are currently interpreted as congenital venous malformations. Catheter venography is regarded as the gold standard to assess these lesions, while other tests, such as Doppler sonography and magnetic resonance venography, are much less accurate. Importantly, a relationship between venous pathologies and MS has not yet been proven, especially reg…
